Does anyone know what oil weight and height works well with the 888r. The fork has about 10 rides on it and from what ive read changing out the stock oil makes a big difference. Im 6 foot and about 165lbs. if that helps any. Thanks
Golden Spectro sells a fork oil specific for cartridge-style forks. It doesn't have the usual viscosity rating but instead says "125/50." This is what 'Zoke recommends and is roughly equivalent to 7.5wt.
The basic starting point is 185mm measure from the top of the stantion with no spring and the leg fully compressed. If you do it by volume it's 210ml but you need to be very careful that all of the old oil is removed before doing it by volume.
The stock oil should be changed quickly for two reasons. First, when the fork is new there is contamination from the manufacturing processes and the fork wearing in - you will see that the oil has a silvery appearance from metal particulates. The second reason is that apparently some of the forks were shipped without enough oil. The oil level determines the amount of bottom-out resistance - the progressivity in the last part of the travel can be tuned by tweaking the oil level for your weight and style of riding.
If want more detail, the fine folks at go-ride.com (scott in particular) have an excellent article on tuning the 888 up on their website. Check it out.
