He's lucky I am not the kind to go drop $170 on a pair of friggin jeans!!!!!!! I was astonished when I walked in a shop downtown to check out their clothes and saw at least 100 different pair that cost $150+. I am just not going to spend that much on a pair of pants. A bike part maybe, but pants??

Don't you remember Guess jeans? Those things cost over $100 back in the late 80's, didn't they?

Some people waste $$ on clothes, others on bike parts. I personally think the ones who spend it on bike parts are the saner ones. :D

Me - I grumble about spending $150 for a rear shock.....

If you wait a couple months those jeans will be on sale for $20. My wife is good at spotting clothes that are on sale yet still barely in vogue.

I'm with you. I'd rather spend it on bike parts or race fees.

That had to have been Diesel or Lucky...or were they Seven for all Mankind? I saw some sevens in Nordstrom the other day for 142 bucks, and some other brand...those were 246! I was like what in TARNATION!

You say your husband is lucky you're not this kind of person. Describe who you think this kind of person is.

i saw plenty of "that kind of person" just now. came back from the snooty mall, which happens to be where the nearest grocery store w/parking is. so so many fake-tan, fake-blonde, fake-body women, who clearly don't have jobs since it was 1 in the afternoon, carrying bags from victoria's secret, j crew, crate and barrel, etc. apparently this segment of the populace is doing well under gwb.

as for me, i bought my groceries, and a bluetooth keyboard to replace my 3.5 yr old one after ogling the imacs at the apple store (yet another sign it's a snooty place <-- note that despite this i like apple), and left.

it's nice that you're trying to make a point that even fake tan soccer moms driving denalis are people, who share perhaps more dna with us than with the ape-man ancestors from which we descended, but i've seen enough of those that fit the stereotype to know that there is some basis to it: cutting off people in parking lots, not obeying stop signs, talking on the cell phone, and these all while within the boundaries of the mall...

Yeah and I just bought a $140 handbag for my girlfriend. I also would never spend $100 on pants but some people do. I used to get all bent out of shape about stuff like this but now i accept it. Look at the way people respond to the cost of a downhill bike($3000-6000). While I see it as normal and justifiable other people wouldn't. You spend alot of $$$ on the things that make you happy correct? If it's a $300 pair of pants that makes you happy go for it who am i to judge you.

Oh come on. You must have SOME IDEA who that kind of person is since you made the statement that your hubby is lucky your not one of them.
I think the answer is pretty obvious. That kind of person is the type that empties the joint checking account on frivolous items like $170 pants. THAT'S why the husband is lucky.

What about frivolous items like bike parts? If someone were to empty the joint checking account to buy bike parts, would that make them a better person? Worse? Same?

I say spend your money on whatever the hell you want. I agree that to anyone else even 1000 dollars seems outrageous for a bike. I would absolutely never spend money like that on jeans but if you like expensive clothes, and thats what you want to spend your money on, go for it. I'm actually more bothered by people that try to tell others what to spend or nor spend their money on. Sure its crazy, but some people are willing to pay a ton of money to dress a certain way. Just look at North Face stuff...I won't drop $200+ on a jacket, but if you want to, thats cool with me. There are obviously people that are willing to buy them, because if not, they wouldn't be on the shelves.

Oh, I'm not saying they are wrong, they can do whatever the hell they want. I'm just shocked to see there are jeans on the market that cost that much. I had absolutely no idea.

If one were to buy a $150 derailleur when the same derailleur was available for $50 - yeah that would be kind if silly. Honestly I don't care though. These husband and wive struggle over the finances is nothing new and can be joked about light heartedly. What is the big deal?

No big deal. I was just being inquisitive and playing devils advocate at the same time.

Plus, the only thing my wife wanted for Christmas (we gave each other a $150 limit) was a pair of $150 jeans. I'm so glad Toshi set me straight on what a horrible person she is. I think I'll go home and slap her for cutting him off at the mall, after I check my bank accounts to make sure she didn't clean me out.

JUST KIDDING!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hrmm jeans over a hundred dollars...who would have ever thought that something that was made out of tent material would become so fashionable. I mean heck I would drop 100 dollars for good tools, or bike or guitar parts or something of that nature. I'm not saying its wrong, its just the things I spend that much money on I will get years and years of use out of, I'd be curious to know how long people wear those jeans for. Anyways its not my money, so its not my problem and as long as people who spend money like that on clothes don't think poorly of me because I don't than I won't care one bit.

I know this seems kinda old, but you think the average Joe doesn't choke on his starbucks coffee when he sees that those "pedalling arms" for a high end downhill rig can cost up to $300?! Almost as much for the pedals alone in xc...(triple ti eggb's)

These high end bike items are somehow comparable to designer clothing. say spend your money on what the hell you want if it makes you "happy"...

If you are referring to rude people, they are at Wal-mart too. Hell, read some of BurlyShirley's antics he posts about.

girls who are whore for nicely dressed guys are gold diggers. or fake.

spending $150 on jeans is a waste in my book, but it's all a matter of perspective. my g/f bought a Dooney last year that was over $200. within these next few months, she will buy a Coach bag that's about $400. would she ever spend $400 on a bike? no. i would...i'd spend well over that. would i ever buy a $400 purse? no. i couldn't even stomach the $50 wallet that Coach had. in the end, if i am certain of outstanding quality, i have no problem spending more, to an extent. at some point in time, i'm gonna have to drop some $$$ on nice clothes, though. i have none.

i was looking for jeans a few weeks ago. went to my usual spots, AF and Express. amazingly expensive. i couldn't believe how much Express has gone up in prices since they were renamed. unreal. then i went to Lucky, since i had never been there. they were more than AF and Express, and i think the pants were sized for men and women (on the same pair of jeans). ended up at Gap and found jeans for $35 that fit great. fit is important to me, and i love how AF jeans fit. the Gaps fit on par with AF and were half the price. yea. after that, mandi and i went to Banana Republic to look around at **** we can't afford at the moment. they have sweeeeeeeeeeet coats for girls. personally, i love BR, Coach, Crate & Barrel...all those snooty stores. i just can't buy anything from there.

Wal-Mart can be just as bad as any of those snooty stores. it can be worse, too. nothing like 2yr old **** heads running around without parental supervision, and slobbering all over themselves.

Thing is, you can have loads of crappy clothes or you can have a few, really nice things. I don't wear but casual clothes myself, but the few items I do have are nice. Europeans tend to have this attitude. Same goes with shoes. Also, you aren't supporting, perhaps, sweat shop labor and the McDonaldization of an industry. Besides, design is everything. Take Apple for instance.
