I got to see the aftermath of a CNC machine that had a magnesium fire. The operator accidentally turned off the coolant which prevented the magnesium that was beeing cut from catching fire. Without the coolant it of course caught fire, the operator panicked and turned the coolant on which let to an explosion. The guy suffered some nasty 2nd degree burns and the $500,000 machine was a complete loss.

Don't know about the mag dash, but in several of many big ass fires down here, we have included old parts that have magnesium.

They did get insurance money for the loss of the machine. The guy did not get fired but did suffer some nasty burns. The company was lucky they did not get sued because machining magnesium is dangerous and they should have installed a fire supression system that could have handled a magnesium fire. The machine was cutting steering column mounts for corvettes.

Old VW's engine blocks were made out of a magnesium alloy...unfortunately, it kept that nice flammable magnesium property...great to watch one of those engines burn....

Did that machine come from the St. Louis area? Cause that very thing happened at one of our suppliers shops!

My dad was racing crotch rockets at road Atlanta a couple of years ago and as he was ripping up the 1st turn hill the engine locked and homey aired it out in to the in field. His bike had Magnesium wheels and as the bike slid over the tarmac the wheels ignited and melted the whole bike into a Honda blob. Pops only sustained minor bruises and whatnot but it was something to see at the 1st race I ever got to watch.

Yeah magnisium burns very bright. I accidentially dropped a block of into a fire when camping once, and people apparently could see it from pretty far away because we got a visit from a park ranger to make sure everything was ok and it wasnt some kind of flare.

those camp fire starters kits have a stick of magnesium that you shave little bits off and then light with the sparks from the flint. Those things were alot of fun as a kid... amazed i never burnt anything down........

Yea burning magnesium is awesome. We did it in Chemistry and it was magnesium ribbon and you cant even look directly at it because that **** is bright. I still dont understand why you would have a magnesium dash.

it's been said: because magnesium is light for its strength. same reason lowers on the mag 10, 20, 21 series of forks were magnesium

Thats rad. BMW is going to be making its M-motors out of Mg. It uses aluminum bolts that can only be installed/removed once before being replaced.
I've heard that RS Mag-21 legs will burn, but that the newer legs (from all brands) have too much Al in them to burn. I've got a few Mag legs in my basement that I waiting to throw on a bonfire.

Noleen lowers were marketed as mag, but as you say probably not pure mag. I always wondered about crashing against a rock, or curb and sparkign a fire,.,,,,,

talk about a great pastime...
You do realize that when you burn magnesium you produce a s#it load of poisonous gases right?

Magnesium is used in the structure of the dash, underneath the cosmetic stuff you see in the interior. It can be die cast accurately, and for large, lightly-loaded structures it's a good solution.

Racecars do still use magnesium wheels (at least in F1 and CART).

I've never machined it, but I've heard you're OK as long as you cut good-sized chips. It all goes to hell when you make dust, apparently - that's what ignites.

wow i wonder how much they are gonna charge ya for those bolts.
Doesnt sound like any feature i would want to pay for.
Maybe another example of worthless innovation.
