I have an old bike that im thinking about upgrading. I kind of want to see if i can turn my '04 Specialized Big Hit Spec into a "real" freeride bike. the first thing i would like to do is put new forks on it, perferrably 150mm and triple-clamp. but so far i havent found any 150mm triple-clamp forks much less ones that will fit this bike. eventually ill put hydraulic brakes and a bashgaurd and what not. but id hate to see this bike rot in my garage and i dont want to sell it. If i can pull this off i want to take it to somewhere like mammoth and see what it will be able to do. Anyways, im getting a little off the point, if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I think this would be a fun little project.

Hey newbie:

There are dudes who post to this forum who are industry professionals, suspension designers, team mechanics, pro riders, and video stars.

I am no newbie, but I appreciate the things I learn from this forum and I try to be as humble as possible.

Yeah i understand that, and i appreciate it as well. And i didnt want to offend anyone because im sure ncrider is an awesome rider. But its stupid that people start calling eachother names just because they think they are better then them. especially newb, because really without newbs our sport wouldnt be able to progress and we would die out within the next 10 years. I guess what im trying to say is its not good to just call people newbs, especially when youve never met them before. Its not cool to make someone feel stupid or bad just because they are new to the sport. We were all newbs once and making fun of one just makes us look stupid and kind of gives the sport a bad name. It makes no sense at all to put some one down if thy are just trying to learn more about the sport. Just help them out, who knows maybe one of them could be the next big star or designer.

Anyways, we are kind of getting a little off topic now. Are there any suggestions on what are some good forks for this bike?

A newbe is a monkey (RM member) with few posts. You only have 11 posts. Lighten up. You aren't even a monkey yet, you are a grasshopper. Relax. You are new to RM so be prepared for jokes. He was jokin with ya

i'm a MAsshole!!!
first of all, it's already been explained as to what a newby is. just someone with a low post count (not all of us are post whores or have been on the site for a long time, or work at a "real" job where we get to be on teh computer). but if you're taking them as calling you a newby at your level of expertise, let them. just show up riding, kick their a** riding and be like "yah, i'm a newby :sneaky: "

about the bike ( http://www.specialized.com/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=6743&JServSessionIdroot=wj9m4luogj.j27008 ), any reason you don't want to go with a 6" single crown? it would increase the versatility of a small fr bike. it only has 5" in the back so 5 up front would keep it balanced. make sure you won'y chopper it out much with a bigger fork on it.

on 150mm travle dual crown forks: white bros fr 1.5 WB fork and i think old marzocchis might have come in 150 travel. i think the bombshell marilyn might have been 150, might have been another model. i'd go for the white bros fr 1.5 20 if that was what i was looking for. but then again, depends on your budget cause you might be able to find some old jrt in 150 for real cheap. if you change your mind and decide to go with a single crown fork, there's a sticky topic at the top of this forum, so don't ask about them here if you change your mind. :thumb:

on your bike-lingo: it's fork not forks when referring to a single unit of front suspension. unless you're planning on running multiple varieties, then use the plural forks

Hey man I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings or anything. Everybody gets a little B.S. when they're new. It's kinda like an initiation or whatever.

But just so you don't get truly harassed,
next time, before you post, do a quick search. Most everything has been talked, abused and battled long before most of us even new what RM was. So welcome to the block, Grasshopper. :)

firstly, this bike isnt an old bike, its a year old... as for a 150mm dual crown, how much money do you wanna spend? there arent many after market 150 mm duals, and do you want to upgrade to 20 mm axel or not. I think you should look into a single crown, a manitou stance flow might be a good choose.

What i mean by old is that its worn out and has been sitting in my garage a long time. the original stock fork is broken, which is why i wanted information on that first. I want to fix this up and actually see if it will hold up on some tough stuff. Then ill probably just give it to my brother or sell it off. My main bike is an Ironhorse.

I think ill probably just go with single crown. i just hate having the thought of the stanchions not being strong enough, even though theyre probably extremely strong. But the stanchions on the stock fork broke off a while back, even though i later found out that the fork was a cross-country model, which made me ask why the hell specialized would put a cross-country fork on a freeride bike?

Ill probably go with the Flow being that they are cheaper and id rather spend more time and money on the ironhorse. thanks for the help though.

I vote a manitou stance kingpin or sherman slider with one of those e 13 head stress reducers or a Boxxer Ride!! 5.25-7" of travel adjustable with the u turn thing. also if u go sc a fox fr 36 or a 66vf would be a ncie choice, then you could get a fox propedal shock in the rear and be gangsta.
