I usually get back pain when I stop stretching for a while. It seems like my hip flexors get tight and throw my lower back into a world of hurt. It took me years to figure this out. I was sidelined for 6 weeks last year due to this. It started happening again this year and I was determined to figure it out. My muscles in the front of my legs were tight and my lower back had to give. Now that I know I stretch regularly. It has not come back.

Fixing your back is simple.

1: Stretch your lowers (glutes, butt, etc) properly after each and every ride. A tight muscle group will affect other muscles, back included.

2: Sit ups! this is the most important part for keeping your back strong. As a cyclist, your abs are always working while riding, but if they are not up to par, your back will start to compensate which leads to problems.

3: Lower back excersizes.

After a few weeks of this ^, you'll notice that your back will feel allot better. Mine did when I had peoblems.

All great advice!!! except for the sit ups. My wife is a physical terrorist……….errr…..therapist. I have lower back problems too, and it can drop me in a second. My wife actually had to do an eval of my back to figure out in my particular case was wrong. We got into an argument about the sit-ups. Lets just put it this way, I hate it when she gloates

Sit-ups will actually exacerbate the back injury. Crunches are recommended for ab strengthening. Just be careful, and do the stretches atrokz mentioned and be patient…..don’t rush or you’ll make it worse.

Damn TJ it's getting worse?! Hey my GF has had really bad neck problems from a car accident for over a year. Physical therapy, stretching, and acupuncture have helped. A chiropractor might work for you, but I would personally stay away from that.

Stretch everything.

And get those abs fit, your lower abs and pelvic floor muscles do about half the work of stabilising your trunk, so get them fit and you have less back bothers as the back muscles will get fit as well and have to do less work anyway!

Ive had back bothers all my life and this is the only thing which has worked for any length of time, a good chiropractor can fix you up in an emergency, like you seem to have now, but I found it a major and expensive hassle having monthly snap-crackle-and pop sessions just to avoid falling apart!

My father has lower back problems and I try to convince him that he needs to do crunches and stretch his hamstrings but he's too stubborn. So he goes to the chiropractor, she works out the kinks...and he puts them back in...because there is nothing strong about his midsection or his lower body. He doesn't get that a chiropractor can line up sticks, but all she's doing is kneeding dough and the dough is just gonna ooze back out of the gingerbread man shape without the muscles to support it.

Oh, and in the NFL, they immediately focus on an athletes hamstrings and glutes when they develop lower back problems. They published an article not too long ago showing that something along the lines of 70-80% of Pro football, basketball and baseball players indicated that shortly before the onset of lower back problems they had issues with their hamstring/glute area, whether from lack of stretching, pulling a hamstring without properly warming up or not strengthening them in the weightroom.

I had mad probs with my lower back a few years ago, read up on it, and focused on doing some solid, focused crunches and relaxed stretching and lowering my weight in the gym and focusing on form when doing my hamstring exercises. The problem went away within 2 weeks after persisting for many months to that point.

The book is cheaper then that but going to see him is very expensive. On June 15 I was at hockey camp and had a real bad episode. Real bad sciatica and now I weakness in my right calf and a few toes are numb. After 2 MRIs and 3 doctors 2 said no surgery and one wanted to cut. The MRI shows a herniation L5S1 and DR Sarno said it was thievery if I had the surgery. I have read his 2 books and now I am improving slowly. Amazon has his books. I would give it a try. Howard Stern swears by him. Just keep an open mind.

If I were you, I would find out who owned the property you were riding on when you experienced the back problem, and sue the land owner. Biking can be hazardous to a person's back and the land you were riding on poses a hazardous nuisance. You should also sue the bike manufacturer because the posture of their frame is certainly in question. These accusations have more validity than the Snow Summit suit in my opinion.
