funny Roadie encounter

I gotta agree with Opie. Do you guys start yelling right as you pass or after you have gone by them? If it were me grinding up a hill and a truckload of teenagers start yelling right as they pass, I'd be pissed. Is there a bike lane or are they on the edge of the road? Whether the rider is a newbie or not, every roadie is thinking "Is this car going to hit me?" when they hear it roaring up behind them.

And I agree... I find it funny that you're yelling "earn it" while being trucked to the top a hill so you can coast down. Once you've cycled up that hill, then you can yell insults all you want.

This is halirious!!! .....Keep this thread going so I can refer back to it when I'm in a bad mood.

It's fun watching you guys get upset and whine. Let's talk about other mean things we can do to roadies so Opie gets his panties in a bunch.

As far as I can tell, the only person insulting anyone in this thread is LordOpie. And he's never even seen the hill.

"Earn it" is something I yell to my friends on the course too. Its no insult, its about putting in max effort at any point. I choose to earn it on the way down.

I've cycled up that road plenty of times dude, I've earned it plenty

This thread offends me because it reminds me that I'm fat and I never ride anymore

Back when I thought I was fast (how long ago? Well, our road bikes were 2x6 if that helps) a friend and I were taking a leisurely ride down a backroad to a shoreline spot where we liked to get high. Same road happens to be a popular leg for many local rides. Some kid on a new bike passed us by with obvious effort. . . the breathing, the high cadence, the hunched shoulders, etc. We're in t-shirts, swim trunks, and sandals (remember toe clips?) but I couldn't let it go. I told my bud "come on," stood up on 'em, and blazed by the kid in a matter of seconds.

I never had a speedometer on a road bike but I used to ride w/a club where we held low-20s for most of that road, and I know I was going much faster when I passed him. Just to be sure, I kept it up until I looked back and saw him turn off into a neighborhood. My friend was still behind him. . . he just shrugged and said he didn't feel like tossing his cigarette.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is comments are fine as long as the rider is aware of you. Someone yelling anything at me just as they pass is not cool. ONce you're past, yell all the encouragement you want.

And sorry for the DH bashing.... guess I was a bit pissy. I respect anyone on a bike... even if you don't pedal uphill

You know one reason why cyclists don't get a lot of respect? Because we can't even get along amongst ourselves. Nice work.

I live near Los Angeles in CA, and there is a steep mountain highway called the Angeles Forest Highway near me. Up this road in the mountains are all kinds of sweet trails. Roadies also love this road because it is a scenic, and quite challenging ride, its quite steep. I will point out that i have no problem with roadies, i ride road and mountain, whenever i can. So my friends and I are in my 91' Ford F350 crew cab diesel, heading up the mountain to go do some sweet riding. Lo and behold, roadies, 3 wide on a two lane mountain road. I did not want to risk running them off the road, so i stayed behind them a little, and honked, hoping they would form up into single file like any intelligent person would, on a two lane road. BUT THEY DIDNT!!! So when that lovely passing lane came along, I floored it in my truck, laying down a nice thick diesel fog that you could barely see through for at least 400 feet. I could not help but laugh when i looked in my mirror and saw them off their bikes and coughing. Some people are just plain stupid.

i understand perfectly that cyclists have a right to the road but i just dont understand some of the roadies militant attitude as you describe, i.e. fvck you were not getting out of your way.

personally when im riding the skinny tires i damn near turn them white from stradling the line but despite that there are STILL a$$hole drivers that scream/honk/yell/buzz by etc. its those fvckers that id like to tie to the back of my 4runner and drag down the road for a while

Yeah yeah we should all lighten up.

But we should all also have open minds. The roadie you see in lycra one day might be a ripping downhill racer out on training ride. I have no problem treating asshats like asshats, but it really bugs me when the DH crowd assumes that someone is an asshat just because they are riding skinny tires. Or the reverese: When the roadie crowd assumes someone is an asshat because they have fat tires.

My quiver has the full spectrum from fixie to DH and what I choose to ride on any given day doesn't change who I am. Some of you don't seem to understand one of the basic rules of life: Give everyone the benefit of the doubt until they earn respect or prove themselves unworthy, regardless of what you see on the surface.
