whatever you know about 24's on mountain bikes, tell me. please?

Im looking at a steelhead with 24's and i've never ridden one, cept a ridge with one in the back...that was kinda odd.

I've got a Steelhead with 26" front and 24" rear. I only use it for bmx tracks and the occasional urban ride. I took it on a trail once and it sucked - really low bottom bracket. Been thinking about putting a 26" on back as well.

What kind of riding do you plan to use it for?

24" rules! That's all you need to know.

Seriously, the main advantages are (for a given wheel build) lighter weight, higher strength, and hence more manouverability, especially in the air. The downside is slightly lower ability to roll over large bumps. So if you're riding street or DJ the advantages totally outweigh the disadvantage. There are a lot of frames designed specifically for 24" wheels these days.

Hey, i got a set of 24s that were on my steel head, im willing to sell them cheap. Im in litchfield Ct, i dunno where berlin is, but your more than welcome to come and see em. The reason im switching is because i plan on doing more xc stuff with my steelhead. The set im selling is QR front and back, atom lab rims, straight gauge spokes and 4x. So in other words, bombproof. Im willing to let em go for cheap with arrow tires.

I'm going to quote myself from a previous post.
However I will say that I don't think you should put 24's on a bike if its going to make the bb super low, anything lower then like 11.9 is probably a bad idea.

................... I really do think a 24" that handles just as well as a 20", and has a 70-72 degree head angle is where its at. You get something simple, like a bmx, chuckable like a bmx yet with slightly bigger wheels that roll through trails better, and with a stiff short travel suspension fork that will take the abuse out of trails, and mis judged landings. I see more and more park/street/trail riders from the mtb world going this way, and I see more and more bmx guys going this way too.

Its still a small segment of our sport, but its growing. If you follow the UK seen and companies like 24 seven, revell, DMR, on-one, and identiti, you'll find that 24" wheel bikes are pretty much the norm for dirt/street/park. I think its bound to catch on here in the near future..... in fact with companies like Tonic, and Union it already is.

yeah it might be a touch odd on a steelhead. ask the fellah who's selling it if you can ride it around some. The steelhead was really meant to have 26"ers though, so you may be able to find someone who would swap with you.

to add to scurban's thing. Norco has been selling a lot of their 'supercross' line with 24" wheels for a number of years now.

Ummmm, no. It has 24 inch brake bosses...

Any ways, the steelhead ride great with 24's. 360s and 180s become no problem. It is a great play bike in the park and really fun overall. The only reason i switched is beacuse i plan on using it for trail riding, and its no secert that 26's are a little better than 24's for trail riding and 4x.

Hey man.

Yeah, i think there are some pics in my photo album here on RM. Id take some photos for you, but im in New Hampsire for the weekend and am clocked in at 25k !!! I will get some on monday.

You wont run into any issues running 24 inch wheels at all.
Again, they are mint. I rode them this summer, and i only weigh 140. I am willing to let them go cheap with arrow launch tires. Remember, bombproof 4x straight gauge with trailpimp rims laced to XT hubs.

Cool. I just checked your album and unless you ran them on the Giant or your Turner, they're not in there. Whenever you get a chance, throw some pics my way. Thanks. :)

And another ? while I'm thinking about it.... Is there any issue with running disk brakes on 24" wheels?
I don't think there are any, the disc goes in the center so it's in the exact same place as it always is...
I'm gonna be running 24" on my steelhead too, should be getting the wheels this week, hope it works out okay
