I went to the U of M and Missoula rocks. Missoula was rated #5 party school and in the top 10 towns for mountain biking. There are tons of trails and DH. It is truely an undiscovered mountain bike meca. There are many shuttles in the area. DHs ranging from 14-25 miles within 2 hours. Might just check it out. I think the school almost hit 20K students last year. Fernie is super close and Whistler is 9-10hours away. Silver Mountain has some riding by Spokane but not real great. Beacon in Spokane rocks. Rumor has it that Blacktail Ski Area might start building trails soon. Blacktail is about 1.5 hours from Missoula. There is sort of a DJ area up Deer Creek by the gravel pit and CWs place. Missoula is in the middle of it all plus it Montana.....
After sleeping on the ground in Missoula I'd agree. You almost convinced me to go there...hmmm...if only their B school was ranked as high as CUs...

Their team might be non-existent but if the trails are there and whistler is as far as alta is for me...might be worth considering....

Damn You! Silverton is so sick. You been there before?
I had not been there before. This weekend (and next if youre interested), was boot packing. Basically, you walk over the starting zones to break up the layers and then you get to ski/ride the lower areas. Saturday was kinda lame, didnt get to ride anything good, but today was pretty sweet. The real reason for doing it though is a free ticket for any time in december or april.

Did that last year. Wish I could have done it again this year.

FYI: Here's the results of the top 5 schools competing in the Collegiate Mountainbike National Championships in Seven Springs, PA. I believe the results are based on a points system throughout the season. Apparently Cross Country races had the most weight in points.

(Taken from CSU Cycling website) (CSU = Colorado State Univ) Just in case you Californians were getting anxious. http://lamar.colostate.edu/~bicycle/

1st Fort Lewis College (Colorado)
2nd CU Boulder (Colorado)
3rd Univ of Vermont (Vermont)
4th Mesa State College (Colorado)
5th Colorado State Univ (Colorado)

Notice a trend here? Yeah, Colorado schools dominate. Take it for what it's worth. It would be interesting to see where School of Mines ranked. They were probably too busy studying to go riding!!

Man I wish I were going to college for the first time.....oh the fun you will have!

Championship results are based purely upon the results of the championship race. Regional champions are based upon series points. XC and DH are worth the same, as are short track and mountain-x/dual.

I can promise if CU is healthy in 05 we will absolutly destroy FLC. Mark my words. I will quit racing if CU's mens DH team does not destroy FLC's mens DH team...
This threads been dead for a long time now but I just found it. Jeff we did it for you buddy, you don't have to quite riding, we no where near killed FLC, it was about as tight as it possibly could of been, but yep CU is officially the Best. And I'm gonna start the shi-t talk back up and say our DH team is gonna beat FLC again next year, watch and see.

Nationals was a very close race. Next year its back to AngelFire and there will be some more great racing between the Colorado Schools. I will be back in action and hopefully will not be racing the entire fall on a broken wrist. Weve also got some new recruits and some returning students for next year. And next time if I hear word of someone poaching the course during non scheduled practice times I promise I will break some legs. ;)

Watch out, CPSLO is gonna take it from the Coloradians next year. Well, they might with a few more women. One thing is for sure, they definitely won the banquet every year...

Hey do you guys in Colorado get scholarships and coaches and stuff if you´re on the team? We get to pay $50 a year, but we do get a free t-shirt. I in no way want to criticize the CO scene, it´s rad, huge, and full of cool people. But I am quite curios as to how seriously they take things, collegiate racing is still just fun and games for us.

Yeah we only got the idea of taking an early morning practice run because lets see you guys did the same thing the year before. We were actually suprised we didn't see your guys on the course.
Next year though it won't happen, angel fire is a lot tougher to shuttle.

I'm looking forward to this next season already, especially since its at angel fire, colligiate cycling is a blast.
Hopefully everyone can stay healthy and we can all bring our best.

-Is your wrist healed up yet?

Just to clarify, from what we were told shuttling the course was perfectly ok, and on the morning of the race there were quite a few riders out there practicing besides us. It wasn't fair that we got a run on the morning of and you guys didnt, but gaining an unfair advantage was not anyones intention. On top of that... I was told that you guys did the same thing in 04. Anyway my practice run was clean and my race run was a disaster, so Im not sure how much it helped us anyway. It sucked that the whole thing got so f-ed up. Collegiate Nats has more drama than it needs already. Next year should be sick, at a way better venue with a way better organizer. The peple running the gravity events at 7springs didnt know the difference between mountaincross and cyclocross. 2003 nats at anglefire was awesome. so we should get more of the same.

Just to clarify. FLC has never done a practice run on the race course when there is no open practice. I did investigate to clarify and found out that last year they did a shuttle run on a fireroad as a warm up but were never on the course when they werent allowed to be, there is a big difference. Paul only got 4 total practice runs in '04 and still dominated.

So uhm, do you guys get scholarships and coaches and stuff? I´m really curious, because it seemed like the Colorado crews were taking the race waaaay more serious than a lot of us WCCC guys. Paul ripped the DH in 04, that was rad. I might be thinking about graduate school soon, and CO seems pretty rad... So are the scholarship rumors true?

There are opportunities for collegiate cycling anywhere. I think USA Cycling is offering the John Stenner Memorial Scholarship right now. check out - http://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=1920

Other than that, No there really arent any schools in Colorado that offer scholarships, especially full rides. I have heard rumors about Lindsay Wilson offering significant scholarships though.

Both CU and FLC have "coaches" but as far as I know neither of them really offer their services as a full blown "coach" they are more in a organizer or manager position.

Go to UCSB  the riding around here is sick, the school is really good, and we seem to be getting new DH riders by the minute around here. Santa Barbara is an awesome town too, riding is close, beach is close, partying is everywhere, and slowly but surely our jumps will be getting good this winter again.

Any of you guys know if any of these schools are big in optics? Particularly lidar and remote sensing. I'm beginning to get itchy feet with regards my doctorate here in the UK...

This might help you here:
http://www.colorado.edu/OSEP/

I'm not very familiar with optics research since I'm a new student here, but I'm sure this school has something for you. The research done at the University of CO has a pretty long history, and quite a few departments. The NIST is right down the road from the campus, and there's been 3 Nobel Prizes awarded to professors at CU Boulder in the past 4 years.

For what its worth, I'm going to UBC from AZ. The school itself it ok. The chicks are pretty good looking, definately the place for Asian fever. A bunch on pubs on campus.

Then there's the riding. Kisks A$$! Tough, techincal, steep. Definately not as open as I would expect in CO. You 3 mountains for boarding right outside the city, then Whistler, Big White, blah blah. BC is definately the world's play ground, but you pay for it out the nose. Bloody expensive as hell to live here and expect to live in a basement apartment.

Anway, my 2 cents

UCSB is pretty sick, or even the City College (which is where my poor butt has to go) The DH riding is close by, and we seem to be getting more sick riders by the minute. Our jumps are getting better too, in fact I'm going out jumping in a few minutes. Can't beat our weather, and our trails are sick.

I know its already been said but, look at the top five from teams for 2005 D1 collegiate mtb cycing overalls... 1-4 are all Colorado Schools! I'm from Nor-Cal and sould be promoting Nor-Cal schools but the DH scene is amazing here in Colorado. The DH, 4x, and especially the collegiate racing courses, are unmatched here and the compition is crazy fast.

If you are looking to continue your education, and still want to race and/or even ride, Colorado is the place to be. Colorado State University has and awsome scene, check out www.ramscycling.com or www.970biking.com just to get a feeAl for all we've got to offer. There's everything from DH, to road cross training, to cross country, to some of the best DJ's in the state at the www.road34.com house. We are all stoked to ride and you will have no trouble finding someone to join you... http://www.970biking.com/images/update_images/blkmrkt3.jpg . Anyway if your looking for a place to go to college yet still ride... Check out CSU! We are taking collegiate cycling (includes DH and 4x) to the next level! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions and/or need any more reason as to why to choose CSU as your collegiate cycling team! Hope to see you next season...

Those are old news man, 1st, 2nd and 3rd went FLC, CU, CSU respectively. Go to Colorado. I ride for CSU and have friends at both CU and FLC. Just incase you all forgot, Keystone is going to have a bad ass place to ride this next year, somewhat like Whistler and CSU and CU are both pretty damn close to it. Plus there are actually women at CU and CSU not just a bunch of dudes playing "who's is bigger" in random circle jerks. There ya go.
