Is Michelin still the predominant option for UST DH tires? Looks like Maxxis has a few but their site states that all their UST tires have a foldable bead?
I've run the Specialized Pro UST tires before. Can't exctly remember but i think i have had their single and dual ply versions. Also, they have the mulit-duro compound. And they are about $20.00 each cheaper. That helps for those that have the "race on new tires" phobia
Seriously......every tire manufacturer should take notes from michelin and just seal all their tires for UST use. I tried to stick a maxxis tire on my deemax's this weekend and was entertained by the stans bubbling out of the sidewall.
Plus the only true ust DH tire they make has those cool removable super crappy knobs.
I've been using three specialized tires on and off that are somewhere between a dh casing and xc casing. They've actually been working pretty well but the compound they claim to be 60/50 is more like 50/30. Way too squirmy in anything but dust or sloppy mud.

Hey, i noticed that i have 2) Comp24's that each have one small .25" hairline slit in the sidewall right above the bead. What is that from? Since i have one on each tire, Im thinking it is something that i am doing but i cant imagine what. I can damn near get the tire on the rim with no tools.

I've done that too. I did it to one of those cheesy marzocchi tires last weekend using it tubeless. It ripped right above the bead like you said. I attribute it to my mad cornering skills tearing the tire. Either that or catching something sharp right when you're leaned over. I've had it happen on a number of tires between different bikes on both tubeless and not tubeless tires. It usually won't re-seal though from what I've found.
biggest reason you dont see more UST sealed tires is Due to Stans and Bontrager<Spelling> You have stans fluid designed for sealing Any tire and Bontrager Super juice for the same thing...... the super juice seams to work well and doesnt dry up like the stans does....... I am running Stans atm on Sun Single track sl1's with 2.35 Maxxis High rollers Duel casing 40 Duro....... no troubles at all with them..... First real issue is to pick a tire that has a sidewall that is going to hold up to DH use in the first place that will Cut down on your side wall slices... Ive railed a few rocks so far and no slices with the heavier sidewall.....Another tire you might like trying is teh Weirwolf 2.5 DH...

It wasn't just sidwalls I've torn. I get holes in regular tread sections that won't seal either. I've had this happen on michelins, maxxis and wtb tires.
That said, I'll never use tubes again on my xc bike. I just can't keep tires together on the DH stuff.
DH tire manufacturers should still make more tubeless options. I've never used the bontrager stuff but tubeless tires always seal up better than non-tubeless, even with stans. Using goo doesn't make a non-tubeless tire work as well as a tubeless one.
How do you not blow the tire off the bead with the Stan's? I had stans on my XC bikes years ago when they first came out...I would blow the bead off the tire once or twice every ride for about a month until I got fed up with it and went back to tubes. That was on a Mavic 317 XC rim and nearly any 1.9-2.2" XC foldable tire and XC air pressure (40-50psi).
I've got UST tubeless on my XC bikes but I'm a little nervous about running tubeless on my DH bike, although I need to get new rims soon so I'm looking at the UST option. I like the tubes because I can run 12psi with Intense tubes and tires and they stick like glue. I would be afraid of blowing a bead at anything under 20 psi with tubeless.
I like the maxxis rim strips because they help keep the tire on as they go over the edge of the rim. I have been using reg maxxis dh tires for 1.5yrs and no problems, except the stan's drying up.
Holes that won't seal? I just use a Park patch kit and patch the inside of the tire. I currently have two in my rear tire and one in my front. They have been there for over two months, with no problems. Now side loading and rolling my tires off the rim has become a problem in cold weather. It might also have to do with my tire being almost six months old.
As for running a tire below 20psi?? Any decent DH tire works better inflated above 20psi. I can't think of any good reason to drop below 20 psi anymore. I have run my Michelins at 30psi all season and they are hooking up great. Not to mention how fast they roll.
I run DeeMax rims with Maxxis Minion UST and some stans inside. I love it. No Flats, No burps, No rim dents. Same tires with the same air in them for 6 months. This includes a week of punishment at whistler, running 20psi in front and 25 in the rear.
I believe UST is patented by Mavic, so all things UST are mavic, I think...
Believe the hype, The future of tubes lies in fixing a flat on the trail. Tubeless is the wave of the future.
