My latest ride or a winter project completed

Nam I am
Yes I'm a Bike whore I admit it !

Well I have been talking about building me a cyclcross Bike for ever, I got this Bianchi Frame at the lars anderson flea market back in 97 . , the wheels are Shimano 600 Ultegra , that were spare wheels ( and still are ) for my old Road bike ( soon to be come a time trial Bike ) , the rear derailer is a Shimano 600 Ultegra , front deraler is a Suntour Mountech ( a real oldie ) , drive side crank is a Sugino touring triple , Non drive is a non descript Shinao, and hte shifter are Shimano RSX Sti 7 speed , Brakes are Dia-comp Canti's that I got at the Nashbar outlet store many moons ago (its been closed about 10 years now ) . and the Tires are Kenda Kross Supremes 700X35 I got at 24 Hrs of adrenilin at the Kenda Tent for $5 each

so all told over the years I have been gathering parts this really did not cost me much or just using spare left over parts . If I spent $100 on it ( over at least 5 years ) that would be stretching it.

and you know on an STI shifter how they tell you not to to Move the mechinish with out any thing attached , I discovered why , there not kidding its a bad idea !

but you also know how they say its not servaiable ! -- they lie!!

there wern't too many parts left over after i put it all back together and it still works.

How different are the geometries of a cross bike and a true road bike? I can't justify buying both, but if I could get one bike that could be used for both.... :sneaky:

Tigg - I'm no expert, but I think most cross bikes have slightly higher bottom brackets, slightly slacker head tube angles and they usually run different sized chainrings (and maybe cassettes) than a true road bike.

But I think a cross bike could definitey be used for both. Before I stumbled upon the Serotta I was keeping my eyes peeled on the buy and sell forums for a used Surly Cross Check - seems like that's a bike that can do a little bit of everything.

Looks like a nice, cheap ride. I don't live too far from work so I was considering either buying or building a really cheap commuter bike. A 'cross frame would be a very nice option, I think, being a little bit slacker and manuverable than a real road bike, but light and pedallable.

Surly Cross check is a good option for that, just keep 2 sets of wheels or tires. Another thing you might want to look at is a on-one il pompino. I LUV mine, I threw some flat bars chopped down a little more narrow than my shoulders with 23c tires, fixed gear and I cant get enough, especially here in center city philadelphia. check'em out www.on-one.co.uk

that's a sweet little bike! I have great memories of riding my old cross bike on the local XC trails...

The Il Pompino is fixed or ss only though right? The cross check gives you a geared option in addition to fixed or SS.
