Anyone listen to music while riding or skiing?

i've done while skiing and road riding, but for trail or DH riding i wouldn't.

I just started listening to my IPOD with trail riding alone. I don't turn it up loud, just for some back ground music.

I do on some solo rides or skiing alone. I've got an MP3 player in my phone and can cram a four or five hours of music on its memory card. But I'm concerned with hearing what's going on around me, as well, so I only use a single earbud headphone and set my volume low enough that it tends to get washed out from wind noise once I get moving along at a fast pace. I also yank it out of my ear for any road segments (I'm paranoid about getting clipped).

Saw an Interbike pic of prototype sunglasses with a build-in MP3 player & headphones. Neat, but don't think I'd want to wear them.

Giro's already done it...I can't copy and paste but if you go to www.giro.com and go to the snowboard helmets, then accessories. They have snap in ear pads for their highest end helmets. They're called Tuneups...then look at Tuneups II, you can do the cell phone/music thing. Why one would need to talk on their cell while they are boarding and listening to music is beyond me.

i would like to have an mp3 player for when i ride cross country so on the 4-5 milegrinding climbs i can drain out the voices in my head that keep reminding me why i hate climbing.

I'm too scared to have my hearing of what's goin on around me taken away when I'm snowboarding...to many sprackers on the mountain that'll take you out.

Once this lady in an aspen suit (hideous tight fur trimmed ski outfit) came up behind me and took me out...she was on a uniski :rolleyes:

and it was kinda a steep part of the mountain and I just hear her going I'm sorry I'm sorry...and before I knew it I was on my ass and she was under my legs in a full on superman stretch pointing down the mountain. It was so goddamned funny. I could NOT get up cuz the powder was about 18" deep and the nose of my board was pointing down the mountain and I have this stupid broad under my legs...AND I had broken ribs from a previous snowboard trip PLUS I was dying laughing. She starts screamin GET OFF ME GET OFF ME! Everyone was laughing, and some wise guy starts yellin...they've fallen and they can't get up! It was HILLLLLARIOUS!

To be honest, the sounds of nature sometimes creep me out when it's 9pm and I'm all alone on the trail. In those cases maybe the music I listen to isn't so much a motivator or a pacifier, but a form of denial(???)

I guess at least you won't hear the mountain lion before he lands on your back and severs your spinal cord. :eek:

I guess there *IS* something to be said for music on the trail.

i always have the phones on while street riding... drowns out the blaring horns of those pesky oncoming cars :dead:

i've been experimenting with different headphones that stay in my ears while wearing a full face for DH and riding the motorcycle. most earbuds just vibrate out and bounce around the inside of my helmet.

when dexterq and I were riding N* there was a guy who had an ipod in his backpack hooked up to speakers. so, everyone could listen. it was pretty cool.

miles davis on the mini disc player makes for great climbing and descending.

BTW- burton has a jacket with ipod controls built into the sleve. very cool.

isnt there some sort of issue with skiing/boarding with earphones on? you cant snowboard without a board leash, but having your hearing impared by loud music is ok?

I usually tape the ear phone buds to my helmet above my ears when i go for road rides. then blare my MP3 player. that way i can still hear traffic but still listen to music.

Id probably do the exact opposite. Probably use it in just 1 ear for DH and Trails so I could get some music while still being able to hear the outside world a bit, just in case. But for road riding I probably wouldnt ever do it. I like to hear if there is a car coming up behind me so I can get out of the way.

I can't do it either while DHing...I NEED to hear my bike (or lack of it)...as soon as I start hearing funny noises, that is a sign that something is wrong.

I tried once but I didn't like it.

I just got an mp3 player for christmas and I went for a ride around my neighborhood with it. Very odd wearing the little earphones under my full faced helmet. I'll hve to find a system. I think I'll only ride with it around my house and dirt jumping, becasue I like the sounds of the trail and nature when I am out in the hills.

i like to snowboard with music. it makes the long chairlift rides pass much quicker. i only have one earbud in at all times so i can hear whats going on around me. but i am thinking about picking up those giro headphone things.

imo people are becoming dependent on music. I like it and all but i sure as hell can live without it, people start crying if they forget their ipod at home

I listen to my Ipod both for road and trail riding unless I am riding with other people. Theres nothing like some good punk music to give you a good rythm for pedaling. I haven't tried it snowboarding yet and I'm not sure I want to between the cold temps effect on the electronics and wanting to hear who/what is going on around me on the mountain.

I was looking for info on this today and ebay has tons of speakers for sale that are designed to fit inside helmets for skiiing/motorcycling etc. They are generally flat and designed to be inlaid a smidge at the ear holes. Most of them come with an easy-access mute and/or volume control. Under $30 bucks too. Looks like just the ticket for full-face mountain bike helmets.
