I'm seriously considering getting an 04 or 05 Demo 8 or 9.
I'm 5'8" and currently ride a med Bullit. The med Bullit seems to fall between the S and M size Demos. What size would all you experienced gravity riders rec?

Im 6'1 and ride a medium Demo 8. The bike at first felt a little short for me I put a longer stem on then the stock 40mm so i think a medium would be good for you.

Gex - do you have it with you at school? If you do, I need to steal it from you for a night of passionate love-making.

Ok, I'm 5'9" and bought my second Demo8 today. Second? Yes, the first broke and I bought it used, so it has no warranty. Don't buy an 04 Demo9 or an 05 Demo8 unless you can warranty it. (i.e. buy it off a good buddy, who got it new, and still has the receipt)

I have a small, and it is too small. The wheelbase may look long, but with the bike's 16.7" ridiculously short chainstays it's a very nervous handling ride. However, the small size is very flickable and very easy to pump. If you bunny hop and pump everything, with tons of manuals thrown in, go for the small. It actually rides very similar to an SX trail. The medium would feel a lot more normal to you. If you're gonna be bombing fast trails and like to monster truck over stuff, you'll be better on the bigger one. I'd say for freeride stuff, go for a small, but for DH stuff, get a medium. This depends on how you personally ride a bike, where you will be riding, and what you can find. Good luck.

i ride a small demo 8 and i am 5'10'' and it seems to fit very well. i rode a medium and it seemed hard to handle and such, but if I was bigger no prob. you can also move the seat and the stem around to fit your needs with out going bigger. but some people just like bigger bikes, go ride them first

I think your right inbetween a small and a medium. So, just go and ride one. If you get a small, you can always make the cockpit longer, with a different stem. Im 6'5 and ride a Large Demo8. It feels pretty good to me. It all depends on what "you" find comfortable.

I didnt hear of any too many 2004Demo9's cracking, however a ton of the first production run 2005 Demo8's had issues. I heard the later batches of 2005 Demo8's were beefed up a little in the welds, and the 2006Demo8's are also defect free.
However Bikenweed makes an excellent point, in that, buy it from somebody you know, or somebody that will happily send it back for you, incase it cracks....regardless of what Demo and what year it is.

Thanks for responding. It's not easy for me to "go and ride them" where I live. From what I've read, I'm leaning towards the medium. The top tube length is only .5cm longer than my med Bullit. The only hesitation I have is the 46.5" wheelbase....my Bullit is 41.9".
The local runs range from smooth and twisty to straight shot logging roads with wooden drops. I also do lift access stuff at Plattekill, Whitface, etc.

Riding on the east coast, I would go for a small. I just got back on my second small Demo8 today, and it felt great. For east coast techy stuff, the smaller bike will be much more manueverable, more fun, and probably faster with the right riding techniques. Check out a small. Oh, and I'm 5'9", and the small felt a little cramped up front sitting down, but it's so much fun to bunnyhop and manual on, it's worth it!

I went with a Med 04 Demo 9. "like new" for a little over 2 grand. I will be here Monday. I would have liked the Demo8, but I'm impatient and this was a pretty good deal.

Maybe putting the shock in the higher postion will help it turn a little quicker. Any thoughts?

Any other tips for a new Demo 9 owner would be appreciated.

I'll be using it for our local steep chutes between ski trails, wooden jump/stunts and lift served stuff in NY and Vermont.

I've never been accused of being the smoothest rider in our group.

The higher bb setting does make the bike feel more nimble. I personally liked the feeling of the lower bb height, but had more pedal strikes that I would like so am giving it a run the other way.

Depending on what year you are getting, the 04 had a small cracking issue with the lower shock pivot point. Keep an eye out in that area. It won't affect performance but a good idea to have it fixed if it does show any issues.

Another factor to consider is the front/rear wheel set-ups. I have a Medium 05' Demo 9 frame that I built with a 24x3" rear wheel and a 26x3" front wheel with a Stratos S-8 fork. Yes it is big. I am 5'8" but like a longer toptube and cockpit. I borrowed a friends Medium Bullit and it was about the same fit.

Additionally I had to go with the 24" setting for the shock to get the geometry right. My ride weighs in at a deceiving 53.5 lbs. It is long on wheelbase and sits taller than most but that is my style for my drop-all bike. I also go with a longer stem (75mm) where most go with a 50. I tried a friends Demo8 in small and it was like riding a circus bike. Again my preference is longer top tube. Try to ride one or the other if you can.
