Nothing, as if I did, I most likely wouldn't be getting the chance to change anything now, which means that I never would have had the chance to go back and change something, etc...

Agreed. Changing things would have drastic effects on the present, so I mean, if I changed something, I was born recent enough that I might never be born. :p

that doesn't make any sense. If you go back and change something, then you are altering "history" from that point on. Yes, you probably would never get the chance to again change history (if you were ever even born), but that's not the point of the thread - the original post was presented as a one time deal - one chance ot change something... would you?

If you go back and change it, the change is made... it's not like changing history means you never get born which means the change can never happen - I think you logic is screwed up.

Either that, or I'm totally misunderstanding you.

Interesting that most of you are going back to change/prevent "big" events in history... very few of you are making changes to your personal life.

I'd be selfish and go back and do something to benefit myself, befriend the Google founders and get in on the ground floor, contribute some seed money to a young Bill Gates and let him do his Microsoft thing and reap the rewards later. Or something simple like take a winning Powerball number and play it.

Well, that's the way this scenario is laid out, but his logic isn't screwed up. Nobody will ever know, obviously, but it's the old thing about what happens if you go back in time and shoot your grandfather - what happens? You never exist, so you can never go back in time etc.

I don't give this thread very long before it gets moved to the PD forum :D

Why change your personal life? I've learned from every experience I've ever had, both bad and good, and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Exactly. Changing things in the past in your personal life would change who you are now, I mean obviously giving yourself powerball numbers would be nice, lol, but changing bad experiences would mean you didn't learn from them or anything.

yes, but if you go back in time and shoot your grandfather, he's still dead. In theory, at that point, you'd cease to exist, but your grandfather is still dead.

Never thought about powerball numbers. Hell, I could easily go for that.

Although....that would probably change you as well....

As have I... but that doesn't mean that if given the opportunity, I wouldn't choose to go to a different college or take a different job or something. Yes, it changes who I am and the experiences I'd have, but it's the chance at a happier existance.

Good point. Although, everything we do is a chance at a happier existance.

I'm really at the point right now that I'm happy with where I am, and I really wouldn't change things. The good far outweighs the bad, and that's enough for me.

right... for most of us, happiness is what we are ultimately shooting for. There are times when I think that if I had gone to a different college (one with a stronger computer science program), I might have gotten a better job, which would have lead to better pay, more job options/opportunities, etc. But if that were the case, I probably wouldn't have met my wife, and thus not had my kids.

So it comes down to the ability to trade a know pretty good situation for an unknown (possibly better, possibly worse) situation. Doesn't sound like there are many gamblers in this thead. Or perhaps I'm just more selfish than most and would rather change my college selection than do something to prevent the holocaust or whatever.

Maybe. But if you cease to exist, then you never had a future, so how could you have shot your grandfather? Which puts him in the position of being alive again, which means you exist, and therefore went back in time, and shot your grandfather...

...all I'm saying is that your logic isn't any more right than his :)

Nah, I tend to be a gambler, but in this case, I see the place I'm at as more than adequate for what I'm looking for in life. I'm glad with my choice of schools in the past, what I got out of them, and what I've done since then.

And there is nothing selfish about working towards a better place. I'm of the same boat...I don't think I'd prevent a holocaust or anything else like that....I'm more interested in learning from things and trying to better them how I can.

I wouldn't change anything.. I would go back and stay back.

Either that or I would take a sport almanac back to my younger self.
