I've decided on going the sport sunglass (or photogray) route over contacts for riding. What brands do you guys prefer? I don't need the best there is, but want them to be durable. Also, how does the prescription part work? Do you buy the frames first and then go to an eye dr? I would like to try them on before I buy them (I know many do the whole package over the internet).

I'm just gonna go ahead and recommend Oakleys. If you want pure riding glasses, get some race jackets. I think they are actually fairly inexpensive (comparitively). I'm an O whore tho, so I'm biased.

Dude you are so Oakley biased, I wouldn't be surprised if your children are named Oakley, Oakley Jr, and Oakley the III.:) :)

On that note, I finally found a picture of my model, the O7:

It doesn't fit as well as my Juliet sunglasses, but they do the job.

I went with Zeals and I've been very happy with them. Go to a dealer to try some on and then if you like em order them direct with the zeal upgrade program. If you send in an old pair of sunglasses they will give you 50% off your frames and 25% off the rx lens. Mine were very reasonable at about $165 if I remember right.

Prescription sunglasses are the best upgrade I've ever made.

Get contacts man, there a whole new world... your range of vision is so much better. They say to wear goggles or glasses to stop stuff from going in your eye & protect your contacts while riding but I found that it really wasnt a big deal at all...

Check out zealoptics.com

My optometrist doesn't carry oakley so I looked into the Zeal options. I liked what they have but my insurance doesn't cover Zeal so I'm SOL until my doctor picks up Oakley.

Nice!

Do they have to be old prescription sunglasses?

Also, I've seen some where the prescritpion lens fits in a holder with the sunglasses over it (I guess this is so you can swap out the lens color). Anyone have these? Know anything about them?

I'll post a pic of all of my stuff later, just for kicks.

The race jackets are about $175 I believe.

For the guy who recommended contacts, contacts cannot fix everything, and do not work for everyone. Soft contacts are extremely limited in what they can do.

edit: i dig those 07s

I just sent in some normal Smith non-rx sunglasses. There is a list on their website of the brands they accept.

I'm not positive their upgrade policies are the same as when I bought mine (about 2 years ago i think), so you'll have to check on this stuff.

Before the Zeals I had Smith Moab HP's with a prescription insert and I hated them. They are really heavy and because they are just normal sunglasses with an rx lense in between your eye and the tinted lens, the rx lens is extremely close to the eye. I could feel my eyelashes touch the lense. I never wanted to wear them, so it was a waste of money. I went with a light grey lense on the Zeals and never wanted to change it.

Does anyone want to sell me a pair of old glasses for cheap so I can get my discount? Did I ever mention how much I  all of you?

At a computer...duh
The Oakley precsription shades are super strong (I actually just broke the arm off mine, but it really should have fallen off loooong ago) and they have a super slim profile against the riders face, as well as being really lightweight. I wouldn't consider using anything else.
