Even at the last going rate I remember when I had a car ('00) it was $60/hr at a porshce shop to have quality work done to my VW.

How much is your time worth? How about your quality of work?

You can find cheaper, just don't blow your money on someone who is TOO cheap and shifty about it.

(I don't know why I'm posting here other than it was at the top of the recent posted list,... hope it's helpful)

every town usually has "that guy" who has a nice home in the country with a kick arsse metal building with a complete shop who specializes in one car maker. Usually they are X-dealership mechanics with ASE certification. Every town probably has this type of guy for honda, BMW, jeep, ETC.

I've got a Dodge guy already located if and when i need work done on my Ram.

Ask around on the subaru message boards, particularly in the forum dedicated to your local market.

Just do alittle research and im sure you'll find your guy.

You'll be surprised dealers are getting more reasonable in price. It may be worth having Subaru deal with it. When I had my Jeep, they quoted $500 dollars to replace a radiator, I said F-it and did it myself. 3 hours later and complete bloody knuckles and arms, it dawned on me why they charge what they charge. After that, I now pay them the $.

Ya definitely dont have the dealer do it, I'm sure if you ask around you can find some guy like me that will to it for a case of good brew. And when you do get those plugs out, dont chince out, buy some good Bosch platinum2 or platinum+4 plugs. And even beyond that, check out the old plugs, look for a dry tannish brownish color, if it looks like any other color or texture, there could be other issues with your Subbie.

Generally, I'm with you - I just questioned this because it really seems crazy.

Feel ashamed that you own a mountain bike but dont have the ability to change a set of sparkplugs.

You should never buy a Landrover product.

They said that they are hard to get to and it takes 3 hours because we have the v6! WTF -

I told them NO THANKS.

Now what?
Yeah, they charge that much because you have to take a good portion of the contents of the engine compartment out of the vehicle to get at the plugs. The flat opposed 6 (it's not a V6, just FYI) is a nightmare to work on.

You have the LL bean outback?

What kind of Subaru do you have? I have a 2.5 rs which is the same engine basically but a 4 banger. My buddy changed my plugs anf it only took about an hour. We did have to take out some stuff, wiper fluid resevoir, air intake but other than that it was not that bad. The are TONS of Subaru forumns wher I am sure you could find more info.
Good Luck!!

I could theoretically change the plugs on my van, which has one of those V-6s with hidden spark plugs, but I have better things to do with my time. The dealer's also better prepared to deal with any contingencies which might occur.
I know you're right. We'll probably have them do it - but not TODAY!

We also need brakes and some belts.

Unless youre a good home mechanic, that statement couldnt be more true.

And to whoever said buy Bosch Double Platinums or 4x Platinums: DO NOT BUY THESE PLUGS!!!!!!! unless your car was designed to have one of the Bosch 2x or 4x platinum plugs in there OEM, if you put them in your car will run like complete sh1t, trust me, ive seen this happen to several people. Find out what the manufacturer specs for plugs and buy those, OEM is the way to go with spark plugs on a stock engine.

You can do brakes your self. It's super easy. Extra so if they are all disks. For a couple hundred you can replace rotors and pads, add a liitle extra if you need to replace a caliper. They are literally cheaper to replace than buying new disk brakes for your moutainbike.

It's not entirely the same. The engine layout is actually a bit different in the H6 models. My Legacy is just about the same as the 2.5 RS, but the H6 is a mess.

I'll second that. Brakes are a snap. Just remove the floating caliper bolt, swing the caliper down, and toss on new pads. About a half hour job max per side.

Belts though....expect about 5 hours, and make sure you check your timing VERY carefully. Last time I did belts, my driver's side bank slipped off the cam lobe and was off by about 5 degrees. Made life interesting.

And a DH bike:wave: :nonono:

IMO, suck it up and bring it to Subaru and have it all done at once. Sometimes dealers offer coupons and specials that may help offset some of the hit. I know it sucks, I dropped $1K this last summer on my truck with the 80K mile service, also had all the fluids & coolant changed too.

To do it half ass. You should have the rotors turned before installing new pads everytime.

the car went in today for a 60k service. So, 60k service, plus brakes, plus belts, plus spark plugs. Oy. That's going to cost me like a day's pay. :p

Yeah, we agree. We're just griping about the $$, that's all. It's not a real huge gripe. I'd rank the gripe a 4 on a gripe scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being a the king of gripes.

We are gonna end up paying $700 to fix Julie's A/C and a motor mount on her '92 Sentra. It's not worth it, but we can't buy a car. It would be cheaper to change the evaporator myself, but then I need them to charge it. I have no idea what the motor mounts even look like, so that's better left alone. Not to mention, it's 2 inches off of the ground(not literally, but low) and it's hard to get under. Beware though, I spent an entire day changing a lift pump on a 96 Powerstroke, because I didn't want to pull the turbo off. That's truly about 8 hours I spent, and it was 4 little bolts, 1 bolt with an o-ring and a giant head, and 2 lines attached. It was brutal, and I should have pulled the turbo. I did replace the rubber tracks in her car, saving $100 the other night, and it took an hour or so.

Moral of the story is - if you don't know how to do it, pay the jack. Like Brian said, most dealers here charge $60 an hour for labor. The cheapest labor will be at least $45, and the dealer doesn't always bill at "book" time, where most little shops do. A home guy on the weekend could be a good bet too.

It costs about $12 a rotor to have them turned here. I don't turn them every time though. If they aren't glazed, or rough, I don't turn them. The Xterra is a pain in the ass, because of the way they come off.

Man - as silly as you were from drinkin' last night, I figure you spent $300 on beer. :D

Well it's definatly harder to spend $1K on keeping a car functional than dropping the same amout on a new bike frame. Kinda funny how that goes.

Sometimes rotors are a bitch to remove, 99.9% of the time the rotors are groved and that will F up the new pads in a hurry.
