Hope m4 or m6?

Kevin

Turbo Monkey
Im *EDIT* Thinking of getting hopes and I can choose between the m6 and m4.
I was thinking maybee the M6 Ti up front and the M4 in the rear.
Anyone think double M6 Ti would be a better option?
I like to think I ride hard enough that I need stoppage power and I also hear modulation is better on the M6.
Share your thoughts please.
Price is not an issue.

Thanks

i ve had 6 pot hopes kev... trust me, i prefer my avid j7s... more power and less hassle... the best hopes IMHO are the old 4 pot mods (not the mono caliper) with the 'pro' lever...

I have 6's on my big bike w/ 205mm rotors but before that, I was running 4's with a 220mm front and a 203mm rear(the 4's are now on the little bike with smaller rotors). To be honest, the raw power is very similar between the two, I do find however that the 6's tend to be more consistant at the end of a very long run like Whistler top to bottom ~1000 meter vertical. It is not that the 4's got spongy or that I would boil fluid but rather that they just seemed to loose some of there bite when they got super hot, this is most likely a pad issue. The bonus to the 4's is that there is a larger selection of pads available, and they are easier to find, they are the same as old xt's and gremica's. If you ride somewhere where the DH runs can be 40minutes you might be better off with the 6's but they are both great.

i dont know if my hopes were defective or what, but i couldnt stand them. i had an M6 203mm front/ M4 180mm rear, and i had nothing but bad luck with them. not alot of power, ate through pads, got very hot, and needed bleeding often. i much prefer my hayes mags just for the pure simplicity and availability of small parts, and they have been much more reliable. in addition, they are nearly half the price.

I use M6's which do work well, however M4's will probably do just fine. About people having issues with their Hopes. Most don't know how to work on them and bleed them. That's why all the issues.

Well I wont be doing any long runs since I live in Europe.
I race mostly in Germany where the tracks are app. 3 to 4 minutes.
Ive allready heard from 2 guys that have switched from Hope to Juicys and love m.
I hate working on my bikes/brakes so are the hopes high maintenance?

yea, hopes are so easy to bleed, that most people use to other brakes, get confused.

I have to agree, hopes are to simple to bleed and I think people get confused by this. There is no bleed kit or syringes or anything else needed. Just sqeeze lever, crack bleed screw, close bleed screw, release lever, repeat. This is exactly like a car or any motorcycle.
In four sets of Hopes, I have never any of the issues mentioned above. If you are having power or modulation issues, try a different pad (the hope metalic pads dont bite that well in my opinion).
I will add that the way the master cylinder works, there is usually a very small amount of air in the resevoir and it is possible to get this into the system IF the bike is upside down for a long period of time or the lever is squeezed with the bike upside down.

More replys proving your (lack of)inteligence.

Again, if you do not know anything about the topic you do not NEED to respond. This is not an SAT test where you lose points if you do not answer.

Haha yeah I got 2 pairs of those HFX thingies laying around in the garage too... I might use them one day when I get back into XC or road or something.
Price wasnt an issue because I was offered a deal but I guess paying for my brakes (like some Juicys) would be worth it to me if the brake was noticably better and came with less issues.

Hows life back in the US?
I guess you must really mis Germany?

Life here ain't too bad. A bit damn cold, but it will warm up. Been out on my KTM 250 SXF a few times, got a loaded bike race season at Diablo, Plattekil, Mt Snow, etc coming up. No complaints here. Sure would kill for a decent German or Belgian beer though.. Another thing that pisses me off is every damn girl I meet here has 3 kids or some ****. Just ranting... The Juicy's are friggin awesome. coming from the Mag's I noticed that I stopped getting arm pump because they brake so well with one finger. Pads are cheaper than the Hope's and there is less play in the lever which I like. For some reason I thought you already had Juicy's on your V-10?

All of my Hope brakes have been great over the years, never had issue's with any of them.

Currently running Mono4's with braided hope lines on 200mm front and 180mm rear floating rotors on my 47lb DH bike.

The bikes been used in the French Alps in summer to deepest dark wales in winter. Never let me down once. Simple to bleed (only required when changing lines or initial fitment) I use a 'one man bleed kit' for cars, allthough the traditional method of bleeding brakes works fine. The pads last ages even in an English winter.
Made by true craftsmen (ex Rolls Royce engine builders).

Weird indeed, I still think its too much time spent on a forum, even if its not a retarded number of posts a day like some people have so I guess were at least semi cool.

Yeah I had the juicys on my v10 last time in Winterberg but their on my 4x bike now.
Someone offered me a deal on the Hope's so I thought I might give m a try. I still see a lot of mixed feelings about the Hope's though and I havent heard too much complaints about the Juicys from anyone, including myself so Im still thinking about it.
Might still give those Juicy Carbons a chance if I can get them somewhere cheap.

Everyone else thanks for the opinions!!

Just noticed something bloody weird. Look at your join date and the number of posts you have made compared to mine. Must be the sign of the apocolypse...
you are both going to die... :)... movers picked up all the shiat sammy :) stoked...

brian hcm is right... most people who complain about hopes don t know how to work on the properly, or set them up correctly... i am not in that club... i ve had hopes for 8 years and i know them like the back of my hand...

and yeah, my m6s gave me more than a few headaches out in les gets / morzine last year... still stand by the dh04 / e4 / m4 (not the mono) as the best hopes EVER...

stick with the J7s kev

I used to have hayes mag 8" front and rear and was really happy with them.
On my Hope I have enough power to get away with a 7" on the rear. I have great modulation. I ran them for 2 seasons now with no problems whatsoever (note that I use XT replacement pads though.)
Certainly not going back to Hayes!!

Either M4 or M6 should be fine. I run both and like them. I would replace the stock hope pads with Kool-Stop pads, they seem make a nice improvement. I also run dangerboy levers, stiff and make it easier to one finger brake. I have upgraded to Redraven rotors, they seem to bite into the pads a little better. Once the pads and rotors are burned in (usually a couple dh runs), it should make for a powerful system. One hint for burning them in is to ride down a hill or just ride with the brakes on, get the rotors hot, then mist them with cold water from a spray bottle, do this a few times, should make them grab really nice.
