Outboard bearing cranks on 83mm shells?

So I have a Foes Mono 2:1 on order currently and I am about to start ordering parts so I will be ready when the frame gets here. I was planning on running XT cranks, but today I was perusing the specs and noticed it has an 83mm bottom bracket shell. On the foes website the bike is shown with Saint cranks. Has anyone tried to set up any outboard crank with an 83mm shell? With Saints or XTs on a 73mm bb you run two 2mm spacers, giving you a total of 77mm to work with. Much beyond that and I dont think you can thread in the axle bolt. The Foes chainguide is a bb cup type and I can probably assume its about 3mm thick, giving a total width of 86mm. Something tells me you cant face down the BB shell 9mm's and get away with it. Im gonna call Foes soon and see how they did it but I was just wondering if anyone here had tried.

You have to get the Saints specifically for the 83mm shell, it has it's own part number. I believe they are the only shimano cranks that accept the 83mm shell. Race Face Diabolous cranks also come in an 83mm shell, not sure on others. It is mainly for freeride/DH bikes and that is why most of the cranks that accept the 83mm shell are heavy duty. SPAM...ive got a set of New in box diabolous 83mm shell by 170 crank arms that i will never get rid of locally. care to take them off my hands?

Actaully... I think Im gonna run saints anyway. Thanks for the offer though. If I have trouble finding 83mm Saints I will shoot you a PM.

phil- i had outboard bearings on my faith, until they bent at collegiate nationals. you probably can't face down the bbshell as it is giving clearance for the extra wide swingarm and pivot thats on the foes.

You'l like 'em, and won't even notice the extra weight. That's what I rocked last year, after I bent my FSA Extreme Gravitys :rolleyes:

Both sets I have heard that creaked were on LBS mechanics bikes. Both were warrantied and both creaked again.

Funny that you say operator error. Not much room for error. I would hope that certified bike mechanics would know how to install Saints. Maybe not.


I like the RF Atlas. Ive run my turbines for 2 years.

how many people never use grease, or dont torque properly. Those two things will cause creaking and premature wear of the mating parts. Creaking cranks is almost always the mechanics fault.

for one they're still Race Face and for two I don't think can fit an 83mm shell. I'm still surprised how many people will naysay Shimano and then give Race Face props. Race Face product is inferior to Shimano. THe only time I use Race Face is their gold DH outboard BB and that's only because it has more threads on it than Saint and some chainguides need that but the bearings don't last as long as Shimano and the tolerances aren't as good.

This will be the 4th season on my RF DH BB and Turbines. It isnt as smooth as it use to be but its still good to go.

And I've run Saints and XT outboards for years creak-free, and many Shimano crank/bb combos prior to that also sans problems.

I didnt know Saints and XT outboards had been around for years. Im a RF guy. My XT stuff never lasted more than a season, if that.

I've had nothing but bad luck with raceface stuff. Shimano stuff hasn't done me wrong yet. But thats just my experience. YMMV

I got Saints when they very first came out which was back in '03. And then I've been running XT's on my Enduro for 14 months with TONS of riding and not one issue. I know it seems like outboard cranks are new but they've been out now for about 3 years.

My first experience with RF vs. Shimano was when the good RF was the turbine LP and Shimano was the 952 XTR. I put the turbines on my trials bike and they lasted, not exagerating, for one move. First move, first ride... destroyed. I then got the XTRs and rode them for three years. I got rid of them when I quit riding trials. Subsequently I havent bought any RF but have lots of experience with them working at shops for years and they do not last any where near as well as shimanos. The bearing might as well come with dirt in them on the bottom brackets. Even on bikes that dont get ridden in the mud they all end up clapped. Anyway Im getting saints. I havent tried them yet but I am sure they will be fine. Creaking is not something Im concerned about. Like someone said it can almost always be cured.

Truvativ's new Howitzer/Holzfeller is a sweet setup that is available in 83mm. FSA also still makes ISIS bb in both 83x128 and 83x133, depending on how much spindle you need. Middleburns come in ISIS, and that's a pretty sweet setup.

I've got the holzfellas on and going, but why do they cost more than saints? Its a little crazy.

I wasnt aware the holzfellers came in 83. The website didnt have anything about ti that I saw but I'll take your word for it. Ive had pretty good luck with the old holzfellers and the new ones do look sweet.
