Norhtstar is out so where to go ? I need to find legal spots preferably known or on a map. I was set on buying a "big" bike this season but will re-think this idea if there is too little DH available. Thanx

Auburn, juaquin miller, and pacifica are the main places that come to my mind. Maybe santa cruz too. I haven't been there yet but I plan on it.
Juaquin Miller is basically in my backyard - too short, shuttling isn't quite legal. Pacifica is cool. Santa cruz is ok for light FR , Dead Campers run is a taste of DH. What's Auburn about ? Thanx

Auburn has some good trails, this winter beat the hell outta it tho. Prolly mid/late summer it should be nice and tacky again.

the norcal DH scene is so dope, Im going to colorado this fall and I am gonna miss it so much, build some of your own trails, show people, have them show you their's. There's so much and its soo good. We have everything you need, from rough technical DH to gnarly slalom tracks that will challenge you guaranteed. It seems like DJs keep popping up everywhere too.

Don't really have the time to build trails. I am sure there are plenty hidden trails but work, family and responsibilities limits my exploration time. I find it kind of strange - you ask people who have been riding for years "where to ride ?" and you get " well you used to be able to ride there, maybe over there..."

people genuinely don't want to share their trails. but i understand why. not only does it beat the poo out of the trails, but here you stand the chance of a trail getting shut down.

and when people say, "just build your own trails", that isn't applicable in all areas. if you build a trail here, the forest service will shut it down REALLY fast.

yea no joke. building trails on anything but your land is asking for trouble

I am just as guilty but if you have time to ride, you have time to build trails, pure and simple. You are not the only one with time committments.

Most hidden trails exist because someone sacrificed a lot of ride time to build them. Most know their hard work could be ripped apart any time, and increased use is a sure way to get that to happen. I don't get out to build trails that often, but I also don't expect people to share their hard work with me just because I ask.

I really don't want to ride quote " hidden trails " i'd much rather ride well known , easily accesible trails - do they exist ?

Auburn is pretty much my stomping ground. Not that I stomp -- I'm low impact and all that jazz -- but you get the idea.

A little later into the season, when everything dries up, you need to head out to Auburn and ride the Mammoth OHV park and the surrounding trails. The place is pretty bustling on saturdays and somewhat busy on good sundays. Just come out and say hi.

A few of us have been known to give strangers shuttle runs for the day.

i disagree. there are fun shuttle runs here. and some are half shuttles. i live in south lake tahoe and 1 of the most well known trails, mr. toad's, is a 1/2 shuttle. Still a bunch of climbing involved, but you can cut out the big road climb.

I know, but the guy wants completely legit trails with no work involved to get to them. Thats just not gonna happen here.

So you would consider Mr. Toads DH ? I consider it a trail ride, though it does have one nasty section. I want somewhere to take the rig and body armor.

W3RD.

Like Ripper said, if you have time to ride, you have time to build.

You will get nowhere asking people to reveal their sweet DH trails to you if you say that you don't want to build, can't, don't have time, etc.

Thats just not how it works. For the builders (assume the trail isn't legit) you are just one more person to risk f-ing it up for them and getting it found with no potential return since you don't want to build.

i still think it depends on where you are. building something in the tahoe basin, unless it is on your own land is asking for big trouble. each year another fun (legal) mtn bike trail is getting shut down around here. if people just start building willy nilly, then i could see even more legal trails in this area being closed to mtn biking.

Like I said before I am not looking for hidden or illegal trails. If you put blood, sweat and tears into a trail keep it , its yours. Just looking for commom well known DH trails - maybe they don't exist.

QUOTE- Like Ripper said, if you have time to ride, you have time to build.

Time to build ??? Job, responsibility, family etc. I'll pull my XC rig out then... The more I look into the Norcal DH scene the more it reminds me of the extinction of dinasaurs.

Do you have time to ride your bike? It sounds like you must sooner or later if you talk about riding Northstar. If you have those times to ride, you simply switch a few to building. You do have time to build. Everyone is busy.

I don't think there are (m)any completely legit DH trails that exist.

Exactly. You sacrifice riding so you have more to ride. If you're not willing to do that, don't expect the people who do to make it easy for you.

Just a note - Pls scratch Joaquin Miller off any to-ride list unless you ride a Bridgestone hardtail or carry a floppy hat and walking stick. It's not the right place to ride like Satans Cheerleaders and sets back the efforts of the EB trails and mtb advocate peoples immesurably. When I was green I rode there a few times and the terrain does not justify any big bike action and being conscientious types we definately picked up on the Skunk at the Picnic vibe from errbuddy. Not worth it. Pacifica holds the key for the greater Bay...just dont F it up kidz.

Build trails - to be honest I don't quite understand what this means ? Are youn talking about building stunts or carving out a trail top to bottom ? Your latter statement - QUOTE " I don't think there are (m)any completely legit DH trails that exist " makes the most sense to me. I'd have no problem helping maintain an existing legal trail, building a trail, well I have no experience and for the last few seasons I was able to pay out of pocket to play.

Hey, kinda out of the area, but I was up in Tahoe South Shore last week (snowed in last Sunday!) and overheard talk of people shuttling "Chinese Downhill" off Kingsbury Grade...are there any good trails around there? Zephyr Cove / Stateline area...I'll be back up there in July for a week would like to sneak a few runs in somewhere it the missus could drop me off and I'd meet her later at the cabin.

Thanks!!

Depends what trails you ride.

Last summer, when it was dry, I wore armour simply because it kept poison oak off of me and the biiiig skidburns off of me whenever I slide out.

If you want to ride in the OHV park, I'd reccomend wearing armour. It isn't that rocky or anything (except rocky and murder), but when things go wrong you'll still get ripped up. Tunnel trail is only going to eat you up if you fall. It's somewhat rocky.

Coolside, on the other hand, is smooooothe. There is a drop or two, but they're small enough to not count.

I've never actually scoped out the DJs and drops around that area, so I couldn't give you any input there.

--about building. I live in the valley -- a sacramento suburb even. I haven't got any place to build, let alone hills to cruse down. I've tried multiple times to build DJs and whatnot, but everything is too open. Very few spots can stay around for too long. Building elsewhere is pretty freakin' difficult too. Not only are we limited on the "potential building site" knowledge, but we usually have little to no idea as to what the land is used for or who it's owned by. I've helped working on a trail or two, but it's really hard to get that 'into' the scene when you're from out of town.

I'm not supporting people giving away secret DH trails. . . just expressing my frustrations with living in a flat area.

Hey folks,
I've read through the entire thread. It appears that, since Northstar is not an option this year, that there aren't any or many real dh options. I live in Berkeley but am willing to travel for a good trail.
I don't know of any folks who're doing their own trail building, I'm not tapped into any kind of a network. I'd be more than willing to do trail work, but have no clue as to how to get beta. Bueller, Bueller..?
Short of driving to Downieville or maybe hitting Pacifica, it sounds as if the reasons for owning armor are rather few this year. *sigh*
Bottom line: if you're willing to share, I'm willing to work. Ping me, please.
thanks.

Auburn has some pretty cool dirt jumps. They are long enough for mountain bikers and big enough to have fun but nothing intimidating or huge. Pretty fun. I like the dirt there, it doesnt really hurt.

I dont know the names of streets to get there, but they are past that huge High School which is on the left. Jumps on the right (high school is on left), at a little pull out off the main big road.

Just want to put my 2 cents in if you are looking for DH well i guess it is what you perceive is DH now that would depend on you skill level if you are just getting into the sport then there would be a need for armor at Auburn but for most of the locals we have been riding there for the last 5 or 6 years and i can bet anyone that has been riding there that long can do every trail on a hard tail or 5inch travel bike.

I have had bikes with 10inch and 8inch and i can say they are fun when the trail gets rocky but bro 80% of auburn is funner on a hard tail. or DJ

I strongly agree with the others on pitching in for the cause. As far as DJ spots in Sac, there's plenty. Some of the older spots are getting dozed and fenced off. Auburn is def. more fun on a HT, it's the only rig I take up there. Haven't hit Downie yet but look forward to later this season.
