I think the big thing is that you can find a thousand reasons to say women can't race dh, and the next thing you know is that there are no more women racing dh.
right on.

whenever the topic of women come up in the dh forum it has to do with guys being faster than them or whether or not they're doable.
drives the ladies away.

these threads always make me grumpy. what is accomplished by saying that guys race times are faster than girls?

On the racing side, I agree with what was said. We are not as strong and the risks are a big thing to overcome w/o the rewards. We do it for fun and to push our personal boundries. So guys, give some props to the girls out there riding/racing. A lot of it goes back to the way society views women, the way we were raised and what is expected of us as women. Think about your neighborhood days as a kid. The boys were hucking themselves off stuff with boards, bikes, cardboard, etc. The most girls stood around and watched, so they wouldn't get dirty or have scabs/scars all over the place. This is how most girls are taught to think, "scars are bad." Many women I know can't even ride a bike and are afraid to try, beacuse they had no encouragement! What a huge loss for them! Most of us had to get past that crap. People still freak out on my scabs, lol.

My point is, just accept us and don't set the tone that we have to be as good as the guys, because it will only weaken the sport (and you won't get to ride as much because your wives & girlfriends don't get it :D).

I can't remember how much each of the top 5 men/women got, but I know the women made half of what the men did.

On another note, I made a whole $38 for getting 10th:rolleyes: Didn't even pay for my race entry....

But, I know expert/sport/beg didn't get anything, so I'm not complaining :)

So, what you're saying is that we should beat up our girlfriends so they'll get used to having scabs? wow, seems like overkill, but if think it will help.....

Just kiddin LD, it was great seeing you again and congrats on winning expert DH. I think women racers are hot.

Woa, so 10th place pro male made $76? That's better than the Maxxis Cup series! What was first place? :hot:

What exactly is there to stay out of? Women's bodies, in general, are genetically pre-disposed for things like child birth. Men's anatomies have a significant advantage when it comes to sports, simply from the way they have evolved.

Downhillers tend to be huge in this era (Rennie, Peat etc). Nico is an alien and didn't count. Clearly a woman is at a disadvantage were she to go head to head with a man. That is all he is saying.
I sadly agree....woman are at a disadvantage in most phyical sports when they have to go head to head with men....this is a man's sport. We ride bikes built for men, course built by men, wear armor and clothes built for men....It sucks but I don't take it that seriously. I'm just out there for a good time:)

Woah, hey! Is this the Fontana downhill thread? Cool! Sorry I'm late to the party...

OK, so I haven't been here (on the board) since Feb, when I broke my wrist at Fontana. Broke it in the staging area while trying to look cool... alas. I'm sure none of you have ever had anything like that happen. But I thought it was sprained at the time, wrapped it in ice and took Ibuprofin and raced both DH and Super D the next day. Little did I know I would need a plate and 11 screws to put it back together... :mumble:

But I got cleared by the Doc to "resume my activities" this past Wednesday, so Thursday afternoon I was pulling on the body armor for a practice run down the hill. :weee:

It was my first NORBA "expert" race, as I just moved up from sport. There were plenty of reasons to be skeerd, but even more reasons to go out to the hill and live like I mean it.

I know I'm not as strong as the boys, and my genetic instincts are hardwired for self-preservation. I know this. And I'm no kid, either (racing age *cough* 39). I know I will never make any money on my bike; quite the contrary. But it's cheaper than therapy (if you assume therapy started at age 2). My biggest strength on the hill is the spirit to do it. And I do it because I can.

The course was challenging and fun and flowed well. I had bobbles and a few little crashes in practice, but managed to put it together for a decent race run. The one big thing I would have done differently: gone to more spin classes in March and April when I couldn't get on my bike!

Props to Donnie Jackson for good DH and 4x courses, and for putting on a great race weekend. :thumb:

Come on, man... the occassional stick in the spokes will do.

Good to see all you all at Fontucky. What a great course and a great event. We were so stoked to be back on our bikes after a looong winter.

Quote of the weekend (overheard) "FINALLY a mtn cross course on a mountain!"

2005 had the Slope Systair (not sure of spelling) competition in BC. True that there are women's specific xc and road bikes, but no dh bikes specific for women. I had to switch to the M3 to find the right fit. Women are making their mark, but it's slow going.

They are not great images, but thanks anyway.

I just found the pics you asked for...they are worse than my others. Note to self, do not attempt to take pics when you are not psyched with the venue.
Here is your request, pretty sure this is them;

Photographers tend to not want to show their blurry, crappy pics.

Seriously, thats about it, the others are of people I do not know and the pics just suck-the whole lot is roachy, so this is all you get, I have shown enough crap for the week.

Not elitist, I have just seen rad pics my whole life, I want to take rad pics...but it has not happened yet, so I am picky.

Cool, now worries can understand that. They look pretty cool the ones you've shown.

Gary/Flipper has some cool pics up on his site from Vigo WC. www.flipper.co.uk

Gary's pics always rule. Best in the business, bar none.
All his pics really seem to capture that something about a race or whatever the subject is. If that makes sense.

I'm always shocked that more of his pics don't get in the mags.

He doesn't bother with mags, why should he? It's a huge hassle and they don't pay very well.

Wow, what's with the Fugly numberplates? What's next? Heart shaped plates.... Lame...
they may not have been the most attractive....but they are better than an effectively large sheet of paper. i remember having to trim an 8" x 8" piece at anglefire last year. numbers needed to be bigger, but the plates could stand up to a week of washing and changing bikes. definitely nicer than a paper plate

I think alot of racers can't get over their massive amount of testosterone and except the fact that there are women in our sport. We should be so thankfull to have more people in mountainbiking, we need as many as possible. As long as they are having fun that should be all that matters.

Agreed, chicks racing is somewhat cool if they are impressive to watch, I just do not want to here how fast they are...unless they are truly fast.

Crap, I derailed it again...So, do you think there will be Prize Money at the next NORBA race, or do we owe the prize money at fontucky (albeit small) solely to Donny?

Exactly stik...but like all men women seem to want to tell everyone how fast they really are. When they are not.

There will be $5k total between mens and Womens Pro endurance and gravity events at Sugar, per the resort.

i'd pay big $$$ to anyone who would walk up to her, say that to her face, and not get his butt whipped by her.

Saying that open wheeled racer drivers suffer no physical exertion is mental. They routeinely get out so bruised and batterred (and dehydrated) that they have to be helped off the track.

Okay me saying no physical exertion was a little bit of hyperbole, to better state myself, I meant that there is a HUGE difference between the advantages of being strong in DH, MTX cycling in general than in race car driving where blobs like Tony Stewart excel. There is no winning with Fraser, I love it. We should chat/argue/heckle at the open, I don't think you'd despise me as much in person.
