If you're getting a Chevy truck with oversized tires and a lift you obviously don't care about gas mileage. If you'd rather not be raped at the pump maybe a Toyota truck like Bikenweed's, or maybe not a truck at all. A normal car (Honda Civic?) would get 30+ mpg and could carry at least 4 bikes on the roof.

The Toyota isn't mine, it's a buddy's. I don't own any vehicle, I spent my money on DH bikes and usually just pedal to the top. My parents can't afford to give me a car, and my money goes towards rent and racing. I am a bike rider.

Dude, bikes on the roof kills the mileage. My old 4cyl Pontiac got around 22mpg without bikes, but 15mph with two bikes up top. Little engines have a hard time with all that extra air to push around. A modern pick up, like a STOCK 1999-2006 Silverado 1500 will get around 15-17mpg with all the bikes you can imagine in the back. Plus, it'll go faster and handle better. This is a hippy telling you a monster truck as it gets better mileage than a car with bikes on top. Plus, you can comfortably seat 4 people and gear, and split the costs.

But the best way to get good mileage with a shuttle vehicle is a minivan. Bikes inside!

Here's my shuttle beast, you can just see the rack on the back which holds 5 DH bikes!
And it'll even go up most dodgy dirt roads in NZ, as you can see from the mud on it and the second pic.
It only got stopped by the ditch you can see there, but its only 100m from the top anyway!:)

I need to take some pics of my truck: 03 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab/Long Bed 4X4 w/ 31" BFG All Terrains. Can haul 5 guys, 5 DH bikes and gear for a weekend with no problem. You all should do yourself a favor and get a Dakine Pick-up Pad. Mine cost me $45 and i have had it for a year without any signs of wear other than a few pedal pin holes. Just throw the bikes over the tailgate and go.

1988 Nissan Prairie, completlely knackered, no back seats, carpet, or rooflining, plenty of rust and zero style. The thing still keeps running hauling us up to Scotland or Wales every weekend though.
Long live the Prairie!

i dont know can you get them in USA but here are so common like pick ups in USA,here people buy more this commercial cars than pick ups, but still 1,9, 75 kw with 100 hp its great for go to dh races...

its 2006 model, 2006 and 2005 looks the same,,

here are more info about caddy:

http://www.volkswagen-vans.co.uk/newcaddy/

and other vans etc.

I look at this thread and think of this new DH/4X organization the ABA is trying to start...and wonder will this sport ever get as lucrative as the ABA thinks? judging by the pics, its such an outlaw/fringe/niche part of cycling.

No kidding. Can you imagine trying to sell sponsorship to a car company while they read this? :)

Now on the other end of the spectrum, I was at Log Road MX last weekend for a practice day. Next weekend there is a Loretta Lynn Area qualifier. I felt like the beverly Hillbillies pulling in with my 2001 Ford F150 SuperCrew with only a 6x12 enclosed trailer. There were at least 20 moterhomes based on medium duty semi trucks ($120K+), another 50 regular motorhomes ($50k+), at leat 20 fifth wheel Toybox travel trailers and ohh a half dozer semi trailers. All this was privately owned at a practice day. It will be even more over the top at the actual race when guys like Nico Izzi pull in with the Factory Suzuki semi trucks and Babbit's pull in with their TWO $150K semi trailer race haulers. Keep in mind half these people have Mules to crise the pits with.

Now who would you spend your advertising dollars with?

A) cheap a$$ bicycle racers that complain about a $25 entry fee

OR

B) moto racers that even the amatuers are pimping semi trailers

For the lack of sponsorship money in bicycle racing, it is amazing to see the cash flowing in moto.

Lessen: buy stuff from people that sponsor races and let them know that you appreciate their help.

This thread reminds me of the first time I shuttled with the far more experienced local guys. I'll spare you all the boring story and cut right to the description...

2.3L 4 cylinder 2x4 regular cab pickup ('90-ish vintage, Toyota, maybe an S-10?)
10 big bikes (6 with triple crown forks)
9 riders plus driver who broke ankle earlier in day and decided to drive and drink beers to kill the pain

So at the bottom of the first run we realize we have to squeeze everything on. So on go the 10 bikes, tailgate down, a couple stacked sideways on top.

Next the people. One driver and passenger in cab. Four people across the tailgate. Two people sitting on the side of the bed, one on each side. Two people sitting on top of the cab facing the back.

Add to that our increasingly drunken driver, twisty steep 10mph road done at 45mph and uphill so everyone in teh back felt like they were going to fall out, and later a gravel road done at 55mph downhill, and you have a receipt for people screaming "jesus christ slow down!!" and "this is scarier than flying a blackhawk at tree-top level in Iraq".

Good times!

Good quotes from that day...

"I think they're screaming and banging on the roof for you to slow down..." "what? Oh, they'll be fine *drinks beer*"

"If you fall off the back do you want me to grab you?" "why? so you can drag me face-first through this gravel hanging behind the truck? no thanks!"

"Ow!" "What happened?" "I wish my shin guards faced the other way, rocks are hitting my legs as they dangle"

Do you have to pull the front wheel off to fit the bikes in there? I have a 2001 f150 screw.

No, you can get 2 standing up at angles. Thats why I got the mid rise topper. Then I can put 4 on the T2.

i've stuffed 4 bikes on a 2 bike wal-mart rack (with the aid of a few belts) and 4 people in a 94 ford escort. never got it out of thrid...
but with 1 bike on the back an escort will amaze you with how fast it can get up a gravel fire road.:D
sry no pics of the over-loaded escort or drifted gravel corners.

ford courier, 7 riders 7 bikes. :dead: you can fit 6 dh bikes upright with the tail gate open. but the road up that day was really steep, so bikes falling off the back isn't cool.

Shuttle scratches anyone? WOW. I dont mind scratches on my bike as long as they occur while riding.
The only scratches usually on my bike are from shuttling? I tend to not crash much?

How come when ever I see pictures or video from some other country (outside N. america) they have these compact crew cabs? Why did they never sell them here!!!!
Its probably deisel too and gets like 40mpg...

the bikes dont get scratched much, coz they dont move around. 7 bike was the record. normally 5 bikes fit in nicely.
