Sounds like fun, time to break out the 3" travel XC bikes and 2.1" tires!!!

I searched the whole sight, but i didn't see any mention of no DH bikes this year. I will assume that they are still not allowed, but i wonder if they are allowing people to take DH bikes on the fire roads?

Don't think they care what you ride on the fire roads if you pedal or drive it up, but they do control what they put on their lift. (XC and trailbikes only)

During the summer, Snow Summit transforms the East Mountain Express high-speed quad into the Scenic Sky Chair. It is used to transport cross-country mountain bikers, hikers and sightseers on a relaxing 20-minute ride through the San Bernardino National Forest to our 8,200-foot summit.

Seems pretty clear to me. Another summer Snow Summit and the city of Big Bear won't see a penny from me.

hmm, well i just hope they are defining the XC bikes as a bike that weighs less than 35 lbs, with smaller than 2.5" tires and less than 6" of travel. Im running my marin that has 5.9" of travel front and rear, 2.4" tires, and weighs 33 lbs.

They let me on the lifts with my 40 lbs AS-X. I was with my girlfriend in full XC mode. If you are up there to ride DH they won't let you on the lift. All of the official DH runs are closed anyway.

There are trails up there, you just have to know where to find them
You mean the 'off limit' trails that are often cited as one of the main reasons they don't want us back up there.

Good call :thumb:

Sigh...

Same as before...

- Micro is just trying to stir **** up

- SS is not opening up the DH trails.

- If you think that the illegal trails had NOTHNG to do with the closing you are SORELY mistaken.

- Best bet? Support Conrad and the Mt. Baldy effort, and pray.

And lastly, don't discuss illegal trails on the web! That's how they get found out. I don't give a crap if you ride em, hell, I am getting ready to build a few of my own. But I sure as hell aren't going to mention them here.

No need to pray for Mt. Baldy, it's just a matter of time. We all just need to put in some serious trail work hours once the Forest Service gives the green light. I'm doing everything possible to get the Mt. Baldy bike park open sometime in August.

Me too...just let me know! I'll be out of town this weekend, but should be free after that. I'll be more than willing to get out there and do some work.

True, very true, but I'd like to tie up all the loose ends before we get anything going. It would kill me to get this close and then have some knuckle head ride off into the unapproved areas and get the park shut down.

We've allready conducted our Archeology survey. Last week we met with the Botanist and they didn't find any rare plants within the park boundary. This week I will be meeting with the biologist and hopefully he won't find any purple-booby-spreckled-toed lizards running around. After that I just need a sign off from the USFS and we're good to go.

Currently we have flagged three very technical DH trails that should come in around black diamond with double black section. Lots of rocks and some drops. We have three freeride trails flagged at the top, which will be serviced via there own lift. They'll be a mix of A-line with a dash of urban and a pinch of north shore. All ability levels at that. Thats on top for this year. If the park is a success next session we will expand anouth 1,100 vertical into what I believ to be the best terrain available.

All thats won't mean a damn if we can't get USFS approval. So please, just sit tight for anouther week or so.

I just got an voicemail from Patty from summit and that in her answer to my question summit will only allow dh bikes that weigh no more than 35 lbs that is not possible.

Snow Summit will no longer transport downhill specific mountain bikes on the Sky Chair during the summer months for either recreational or competitive purposes. The resort will continue to haul conventional (cross-country) mountain bikes for general public on the Sky Chair, with access to off-site Forest Service trails and roads. The resort has taken this action because of the liability exposure and forest damage from downhill bikes. Furthermore, there will be no more biking of any kind on the ski runs.

Any one of the following four factors will disqualify a bike from being transported on the chair:

1. Bikes must be less than 35 pounds.
2. Designated tire size must be less than 2.5.
3. Front shock must have less than 6 inches of travel.
4. Bikes must have three chain rings unless they are single speed.

This is taken DIRECTLY off their website. Why sould you start a thread like this???

Yeah there is hardly any snow up there. The key is "hardly", but there is still some. The reason things keep getting pushed back is because I a trying to have the whole mountain studied at once. That way, assuming the park is a success, we can expand without having to go through this huge proccess again. The whole vision of this park is set with long term goals. Long term goals typical cause short term sacrifice, but it will be well worth it.

well a downhill bike by definition is kinda somewhat broad and open ended and i don't think summit clearly defined that. i really don't think summit will really welcome downhillers anymore bec there is another lawsuit forthcoming from a league of freeriders in LA suing summit for discrimination for not alllowing freeriders and downhiller and only catering to xc bikes.
threads like this is healthy for the biking community especially if you don't want to sacrifice in the short term basis especially if you plan on moving out of state soon.

Hey MIRCO...what are you talking about!
I think Summit clearly defined what kind of bikes they don't what up there. It sounds like your "broad and open ended" definition of a downhill bike weighs less than 35lbs, has a tire less than 2.5inchs, with 6inch or less front shock travel and has more than one ring gear. Because I was up at Snow Summit riding almost every weekend and I didn't see to many "downhill" bikes like that. My bike fails the test on all those rules, same with several other people I know. So if you can find a loophole in those rules please tell us! And is it possible for you to be “especially” more broad and open ended with your last sentence??? You’re just splitting hairs and stirring up **** like a 13 year old girl.........ASSHAT!

thats youre problem, your jaded to think that dh bikes needs to have the blings and whistles magazines made you to think should be. I have a single speed HT for downhilling and it's a downhill bike to me so i guess i am my own loophole. say hi when you see ripping down summit on all the weekends you go up there on.

Having never been up there since they closed, how do they check some of these things? Do they cycle your suspension to measure the travel? Do they have a scale there? Or if one of the staff decides that your bike is too downhillish, do they just ask you to leave?

What about helmets/pads? Do they care if you show up with a full face or not?

I think I could have a pretty good time there with an sx trail.

from experience accounts, the base station has a chart of "typical bikes not allowed in the mountain." I think zach, one of the lift guys, told us that they don't really police or enforce the no dh stuff strictly unless you're stupid enough to bring a bombshell dh frame with monster t although they were instructed to keep an eye out for Konas and bullets bec a lot of them are converted to pseudo trail bikes. Norcos I know are not allowed. also I found out that if you say that your heavy all mountain "trail" bike is bought from Walmart, they'd allow you to ride up the lift bec they don't want to discriminate the ill-informed internet-deprived folks who happily bought motiv bikes from the chain stores but that usually doesn't fly with Mongoose and Schwinnn bec they know EC races DH and Dave Cullinan raced DH too. I can't wait to go next weekend and wait in line checking out the hot chicks who are checking out rockstar bikers. thank god they don't allow racer type dhers anymore or else id be nobody among the hunnies.
