It prompted cries for change at Amtrak, the nation's federally subsidized passenger railroad, which has been plagued by funding shortages, mechanical problems and management turmoil.

"If there was ever proof that Amtrak is being terribly mismanaged with unqualified people at the helm, this power outage at the height of the morning rush hour is it," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. "This outage, quite literally stopped thousands in their tracks and for a rail service that so many people rely on, this is unacceptable."

Amtrak officials declined to respond to the criticism.

Amtrak has debt of more than $3.5 billion and its operating loss for 2005 topped $550 million. It has never turned a profit in its 35 years of existence. The railroad has had a host of problems in the last year.

i would love to have a system here like they have in Europe, but America is fvcking huge.

Heck, we should (here in Denver) at least have a train that runs along I-70. Forget the countless hours people are stuck in traffic, a train would save lives.

You'd think though that America is densely populated enough in places that a proper high speed train network would be feasible. By proper I mean bullet trains travelling on dedicated lines.
It wouldn't be feasible everywhere but in that north-east area at least you'd think it would be.

I loved riding the trains in Europe.
I'm just a n00b traveler, and have only been to Ireland, but their trains were awsome. Clean, on time (for the most part), and really got you where you needed to go. I was amazed at the lack of grafitti and the overall cleanliness of the trains. If public transpo here in So Cal was half as good as the Irish trains I would use it.

I have heard that other places in Europe also have nice, clean , and efficient public transpo systems. Personally, I can't wait to go to more places in Europe.

Wish the US would get in action & look at some other countries for examples & help.
It's just a different mentality here in the US. Nothing will probably ever change.

Remember Europe as a whole is basically as big as the US. Euro Railways cross borders, so it's not the size that's the issue. You can double confirm that with a quick glance at Australia.

Now if you really want to see a nicely run railway system that is literally a pleasure to use, try Japan or Switzerland. When people say you can set your watch by Swiss trains they are NOT kidding. And they are clean, comfy and quiet.

When I was in Japan I travelled on trains with polished wooden floors, leather seats, cool subtly lit white corridors with backlit glass art - amazing. Like something out of a sci-fi movie.
