Hi

I currently have a v10 with fox dhx 5 shock and really not liking it, feels way too progressive and undampened at the start/midstroke and feels really unpredictable. I have spent ages trying to get it right (2months of trying different settings) and still its not good despite being tuned by TFTUNED, so iam looking to replace it with something like a Double Barrel or roco.

Does the v10 need a platform shock to perform well or can i get off with a double barrel or roco?

Well, I now I might get flamed by the "anti-avy-gang", but I would recommend you an Avalanche shock. I think it would suit your needs well. You get a very high quality shock which will be set up to match your needs.

thanks for your advice, never considered an avy. will look into it.

was looking mainly at the Roco and double barrel because i can get them for a good price.
Anyone else have any suggestions/recommendations?

anytime you need a spring over, say, 450lbs, i think the best choice would be an avy. cant say much for how the DB works on a v10 but roco works very nice on m3's at least.
is this going on the new or old v10? if its the old v10 i would go avy all the way.

The problem with after market shocks on a V10 is the leverage ratios, the V10s are quite strange. The V10 has a falling rate (thats why they are good over small pumps) then a rising rate then a faling rate at the end. So a specialy tuned shock (Like the OEM santa cruz DHXs) to make it feel right. Turn you pro pedal OFF, the VPP design works off of chain tension to pedal well, you dont realy need the pro pedal and it will feel way better.

thats the thing tho propedal is fully off.

It is the new style V10 (2006.)

To be honest Iam not really concerned about pedalling, just about it's performance on the track. I forgot to mention i just race DH dont do freeride or anything else on this bike.

Is an avy progressive or can it be tuned to be more linear?

i know that push is doing the whole syndicate team's shocks for this season, and will be offering the same tuning for the dhx soon. People really like their pushed vanilla rc's and i should see no reason why the dhx wouldnt be the same.

is the bottom out adjust dialed off a little, because the shock can be a little harsh with a lot of the bottom out adjust on.

It can be adjusted to your needs......progressive or linear.

Since ProPedal is hardly any platform and VPP pedals well I would say a ROCO or DB would work well.

the bottom out adjuster is wound nearly full out. The shock seems to spike alot and not use full travel despite me having the correct spring. And iam not running huge amounts of air in the boost valve (130psi)

Incorrect. It begins with a dramatically rising rate from around 7:1 to close to 3:1 at the sag point and levels out (sorta) until it goes back up to around 4-5:1 in the last quarter or third of the stroke. If graphed out if looks like an upwards opening parabola (if the leverage is plotted y vs. x so you get the 7 dropping to 3 as x increases).

Seems to me a Rocco is what you are looking for. You want a shock that will perform well on the track...not worried about pedal bob or any of that stuff. Rocco is very basic (but very effective). I would go for that, sounds like it is exactly what you want.

anyone know for sure if the roco and double barrel can cope with the high leverage ratio on the v10?

If you are racing don't get an avy they are insanly heavy.

youre wrong, a ti sprung chubie (ti springs available for it in 450lbs which is the most commonly used avy spring rate on a v10) is going to be less than 100g more than a 5th or swinger (comparing with those because he doesnt want a dhx it seems)

actually, a chubie is LIGHTER than a swinger.

Are you sure your shock is ok?
I have the dhx5.0 on my 05 v10 and I have none of these problems.
It takes small bumps (or any bumps really) like a magic carpet and tracks like glue.
Sounds too me like a bad shock...

I have had the thing for about 6weeks, tried every different setup combination and it doesnt seem much better. I like the rebound pretty slow and when i run the DHX like this it seems to spike. I have even taken it to Tim Flooks who tunes for people like Steve Peat etc and he thinks i have it setup fine.

Iam running a 600 spring on it which is lighter than what MOJO have recommended and TFTUNED says its correct but still feels VERY stiff and unresponsive!? Iam about 90kg, what spring do others use?

Im 77kg and I run a Ti 450 spring (which is the standard spring rate I believe?) which I ordered at MOJO. They reccomended me this spring rate and it seems to be spot on.
Santa Cruz have a chart on theyre site which is pretty accurate,

That just doesnt sound right for a v10, something is definitly wrong and I doubt its the quality of the shock...

i agree 600lbs sounds too high, give 500 a try.

Right, since kevin recommended a 500 spring I have been out on the bike quite alot trying it out. The spring feels perfect however the shock still seems to wallow midstroke and speed up at the end of a run. Due to this Iam looking to try another shock; double barrel or roco. Due to the high leverage ratio on a V10 and the VPP does anyone know for sure if these shocks are suitable, if so is the double barrel worth twice the price and why?

Iam also open to other suggestions: like avy but need to know that it is suitable for the bike and pure racing!!?

thanks
john

I just put a Roco on my '04 V10 and it's titty! Super plushness.

It still pedals fine, but if you are running lots of races where alot of pedaling is involved, I'd go with a DHX 5.0.
