i'm riding mostly freeride and dh obstacles like diablo (diablofreeridepark.com) which is mostly rock and drops and jumps..i'm riding blacks and maybe doubles sometime this summer..right now i'm running shin pads made by fox which i got when i was 10, so i duct tape em on, along with a motorcross chest protector and my old dirtbike helmet..i think it is time for a gear upgrade, so i am going to get some new stuff. i want the 661 pressure suit(long sleeve) and some nice slip on shin pads. what would be a good shin pad? how about size for both (im 5 6 and still growing) and what do you think of jensonusa.com or is there a better/cheaper location to get everything..and is this a good price on the pressure suit?

I was once in your position. I think the most important thing to consider when choosing pads is fit and comfort. That way you wear them and they stay in place. There are lots of choices. The only ones that have worked for me are Dainese, 661 and Race Face (Roach). I like Fox riding gear (gloves and shorts). I think the way to go is either with a full body suit (Dainese) or with a full upper body suit and shin guards. I currently ride with Race Face Rally FR shin guards and this year's 661 Pressure Suit. I'd like to switch to a full Dainese shuttle suit. They're more expensive, but all the Dainese stuff I've owned has been very light and comfortable. It's made of a tacky mesh that doesn't move too much when you crash. Check out the Dainese stuff on Beyond Bikes or get in touch with Transcend here on Ridemonkey. Good luck.

The RaceFace/Roach fr or dh leg armor should do you wonderfully. I got the dh version and it is overprotection, and they never slip around or move on my leg or anything.

**in case you didn't know, both race face and roach make the same version of this armor. there is no difference that i know of between the two.**

jenson, pricepoint, go-ride, mojowheels are all reliable and competitively priced. Check out the tld combat shorty's. Recommended for 5'10 and under. I've had fox, tld, and dainese. Had the best luck with the tld's in terms of wear and staying put.

Body armor is the way to go. Even if it doesn't save you from breaking a collarbone or wrist in a huge wreck, it will save you lots of scrapes and bruises in a minor stack. That's what it's best at. There are lots of times that I've taken a digger and didn't realize how bad it was until I take off the pads at the end of the day and see a deep gouge in the plastic. Each of those would have probably been stitches and the end of the day.

I recommend rockgardn, their new knee shin pads don't move at all and they fit very well if you a big guy, but even if you are not they have enough adjustments to fit like a glove to anyone. If those don't work for you a guess you could go with the launch shin/knee pads. Instead of the pressure suit go for a roofgarden Flat jacket, loads more protection, the best Quality and strength for your money. I am still riding with my 04 and it still saves my A$$ on trails. The new ones are even better, they are lighter breath better and offer more protection and you could wear it as a vest or half suit.

here is their website. CLICK HERE

PS, sorry for my spelling im in a rush.

one last thing just a heads up i have tried a couple of Roach leg guards and they seen to run big length wise, and don't fit well with people with fat calves. also they run big and last time I checked they only came in big sizes.

they come in adult and Jr i think, but thier straps almost allow them to fit to anyone like a glove, the thing about knee shin guards which i should have stated, it is all about which one fits you the best.

I use Roach FR knee/shin guards and love 'em. The elbow /forearm guards are great too. If you want a full upper body jacket, loo to Rockgardn since it has detachable forearm protection, which is a nice feature. If the MX chest protector you already have is doing the job, just get a set of Roach / RaceFace pads and you are good to go.

Just con your parents into buying your armor. Just tell them it's way cheaper than all those insurance premiums and $300 ER visits.

I really like my Dianese. I will never buy another brand upper. I'm going on year 5 with mine and it's still going strong. I just washed it and patched some small tears, and I was surprised how good of condition it's in for having taken so many hard crashes.
For knee/shins, I've been real happy with my Mace and I'm picky. Though it wasn't cheap.

I'm an inch taller than you and skinny. I use XL for both knee/shin and forearm guards. They fit perfectly.

they know about the er and broken bones with me..i got to pay for everything on my bike..i paid for half of it as a bday gift last year..i got it at shop owner's price 1600 and i paid 800 and he paid 800..

i don't think my dad will get it for me, but i could be wrong, hes the one who wants me to get new pads since i showed him the picture of the drop i did, and then he goes,"i want you to get new pads" so i guess i can try, i am working this saturday though..$10 an hour w/o taxes since its my dad! i will either do flooring with him or help the carpenter in my house doing crown molding..either way, i need the money...he might pay for the shins., i might have to pay for the suit though

I have the Steve Peat version from last year of the 661 pressure suit, it takes awhile to get it feeling like it fits but its light and seems to cover most areas that I land on. I am 6' and 170 lbs and I fit a med. I have the roach DH leg armour, went from 661 to them and they are sweet, they dont moved even when you eat Sht into the rocks. If you are on a budget go this route, just my 2 cents

always try this stuff on first. i have tried on enough different sizes in different brands to realize that they are all tough to be sure of until they are on your body. some stuff fits well but slides easily. some stuff doesn't slide, but fits awful. some pads use rubber ribbing to keep them from sliding on your skin. it does that, but it can get painful or annoying on rides with more pedaling. try it all out.

i do like my roach DH leg pads for protection. they go from my knee all the way to my ankle. i never worry about them sliding down, because they have nowhere to go :) i have used 661 forearm/elbow pads in the past and some models work great, others don't.

bottom line - don't buy it until you try it... on.

good luck!

Couldn't agree more about trying stuff on first... and maybe taking a quick test ride, if the shop will let you. I picked up some Fox North Shore Knee Shin guards. Since the wrap around the leg, they tend to rub... a lot. Aside from some raw skin, they kept the platform pedals from digging into the back of my leg.

Anyway, use clipless pedals now with Fox Launch Knee Shin Guard, easy off and on. Super comfy.

I'm with Rigidhack, I picked up a rockgardn flak jacket earlier this year and it's great: Not too pricey, good coverage, adjustable, and the arm guards are removable so you don't need two pair.

But I didn't like the rockgardn leg armor so I went back to Race Face (Roach). And for the guy wondering, Race Face bought Roach a little while back, so although some say Race Face and some say Roach they are otherwise the same pads.
