Hi girls,

I just wanted to give you an update on my experience at the Whistler Spokeswoman bike camp. My overall experience was amazing. There were about 15 women signed up, and they divided us into 3 groups based on our skill level. Our instructors were top notch pros including Kelly Sherbenin and Daamo Skelton.

While I was hoping to learn how to do bigger drops and jumps, more time was spent re-learning some fundamentals. I thought my riding style was fine, but realized that I was doing a few things wrong (not keeping my legs loose enough and not weighting the handlebars in the corners). So, a lot of time was spent dialing these skills in.

We worked on manuals and drops quite a bit to get the proper technique down. Unfortunately, my bike held me back quite a bit (I rented a bike in hopes for a DH bike, but they gave me a Kona Coiler--I may as well have brought my SC Heckler). The Coiler had no standover clearance and was too big for me. Its also a tank of a bike for what it is. I had one bad crash on a drop, but came out in one piece (I just had a sore neck the next day).

I did learn to jump though, and that definitely gave me some confidence. I must say that the other girls at the camp were amazing. There was no weird girl competition and they were all very fun, friendly, and encouraging--and I met some great friends to hook up with for riding at Whistler! Overall, I feel good about my new riding style and having the fundamentals to build on for drops and jumps.

Also, they provided lunch and beers (Apres) at the end of the day. I'm so excited to practice jumps, drops, and my new cornering skills. If anyone has any questions about the camp, feel free to PM or ask in this forum.

I'll try to post some pics when they are available!

Hey sounds like you had an excellent class and of course with the incomparable Daamiann - I don't know the other instructor. Where did you guys do your drops and jumps - in the skills areas or did you go on the trails? Just wondering if you did A-line. Too bad about the bike though! I'm surprised you didn't get one of their regular Stabs they rent at the base of the lift which are true DH bikes. I find the Coiler to be too big and stretched out, except in the small size.

I think Gene Hamilton has a better ride downhill camp in Colorado.

I really liked his basic mountain biking camp that he taught in San Jose. If you get a group together, he'll come out to your area and teach.

Hi,
I'm going to the Spokeswoman camp in August. I've been riding for a few years, but am too scared to do jumps or drops. I'm hoping this camp will help with those skills so I can join my husband more. We went last year in Aug. and had a great time. I rode my specialized cross country, not quite the bike for Whistler. This year, I'm renting. I hope I don't have the problem you did since I'm 5'4". Thanks for the info.
Hey, looks like you're from Issaquah. Any good rides out there? I'm living in Puyallup.

Hi Starbabes--serioulsy, just bring your XC bike and rent a DH bike if you will be doing any riding other than the camp. You don't need a DH bike for the camp and the package deal w/ rental comes with a Kona Coiler--so subsitutions. In Issaquah, there's not much for DH riding, but there is lots of good XC. Tiger Mountain is the standard favorite after work ride, and is also fun whenever. If you PM me, I'd be happy to show you around there sometime, if you've never been. Its a 3 mile ride up, then some fun gravity assited XC stuff on the way down.

I've lived in Puyallup for a year and still have not been to ride Tiger yet. I'm going on a girls group ride there in two weeks through the BBTC. My all time favorite is Black Diamond/Lake Sawyer. We used to live 5 miles from Victor Falls, too bad that's closed down permanently though. I'd love to ride Tiger with someone who knows the trails though. Maybe we can do that.

I'm doing the camp in a few weeks! Can't wait - thanks for the very positive feedback. It's always good to hear that other people have had a great experience, especially when there's more than one option. I'll be riding my XC so I'm so happy to hear that it will be fine for the purposes of this camp. Glad you had such a good time:D
