Out of my mind, back in a moment.
Dogwonder decided he would give up working for an evil microchip company and become a civil servant. He applied for, and got a job as a janitor in the Pentagon, down in Washington. Every morning while walking through the Pentagon pushing his janitorial cart, he passes by a portrait of Jefferson Davis hanging on the wall.

Why does he pass Jefferson Davis's portrait every morning?

I just googled him. Before the Civil War, He was a two-time US senator and a Mexican-American war hero.

Maybe that's it. Don't know really. What other historical figures are in the hallway where Dogwonder works?

You are on the correct track. However, the answer lies in the location where it is hung.

Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederacy I believe. Which begs the question, why is his picture in the Pentagon?

Maybe something to do with all the country's leaders the US has taken down. Or foreign leaders who have claimed to rule part of the states...

THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN!!!!! haha, maybe they were just putting up old leaders. Because Jefferson Davis was a huge leader during a complicated time in our country.

All former secretaries of war have portraits? I mean cripes, tomorrow I'll just go ask the boys at the NSA if I have to...
WINNER

Davis served as the U.S. Secretary of War under President Pierce long before the Civil War.

We no longer have a Secretary of War. We have a Secretary of Defense.

Awesome guess.

Sometimes I'm a dim bulb.

I didn't realize this was a riddle. I just thought you were hacked off that a Confederate hero was memorialized in the Pentagon.
