i'm lookin' for a good dh bike, but want somethin' that leans a liittle more towards large gaps and drops. i thought the v10 would be a good bike for this, but i'm bein' told that it's more of a race bike. what's a large travel bike that's gonna soak up big drops?

Anything with an Avalanche shock and Hope brakes will be just fine...

Actually what you are describing seems to be more and more rare these days. There are plenty of freeride bikes that have slightly steeper angles and 7-8" travel but not a whole lot of bigger travel bikes out there that aren't built to be race bikes. You could look for something like a Brooklyn Machine Works but that's a little old school and probabally over priced. Demo 9 would be a good choice, Kona makes a long travel bike but I can't remember exactly what it's called. If you're willing to live with a little less travel you'll have a lot more options.

demo 9, kona stab supreme(my bike)!!!

not quite sure but i think the foes fly and dhs mono would do great....not the new 2:1(???) dhs. i've allways thought the dhs mono would be fun for drops, the fly is a good whistler type bike!

You are my new hero...insane drop.

As for the big monster huck rig, i'd say go with a Banshee Scream, seriously. Hook up with an 02-03' monster t (one of the best forks of all time, seriously) and and a new dhx with some hope 6 pots and live happily ever after...

and only have 8" of travel.

Does 1 or 2 inches of travel really make a difference on big drops? Especially when the shock stroke is the same.....I'm gonna guess not, but I may be worng

It's not all travel. I've seen pics of people doing huge stuff with lower travel bikes. Using a lower travel requires being a smooth rider. It really depends on the rider though.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Cedric Gracia won Red Bull Rampage one year with his 7" travel Gemini.

-In Super Heroes some pretty big stuff was done on a 7" travel bullit.

-In Slopestyle competions, many people don't use downhill bikes and hit some huge stuff, like Derren Bearclawth (sp?) for example. He did a 360 on that huge road gap, on an SX trail.

- On the other side, people like Bender used Huge/Heavy bohemouths with like 12" of travel.

considering I can do 8 footers to flat on my hardtail with 80mm fork.....anything more than 7 inches is too much. Granted what I do is stupid as hell, but I still don't break anything, the bike or me. And i'm 205 lbs.

Demo 9. My bud just got one and it's a better free-rider IMO than the 8. Taller and steeper, w/ more travel and beef.

Last summer, I rode the NorthShore trails in BC on my 8, and it felt rather pig-like on the ladder bridges. I did smack my chainring numerous times, and the raked out angles made it a little sketchy on some of the super narrow stuff. I'd get something steeper than the Demo8 if you'll be doing much bridge stuff, and the Demo9 sounds about right.

Also check out the Santa Cruz VPFree, the Turner RFX, the Iron Horse 7Point, the Kona Stinky, the Devinci non-race frame, a Cannondale Gemini, a Trek FR model, etc. All are great bikes, and are aimed at what you want: going big.

I will throw in a vote for the Demo-9. I have an 05' with an 06 Boxxer Team. 2 Wheelsets and a few adjustments and it is like 2 bikes in 1:

Huck machine - Wheelset # 1 - Hugi front/Ringle rear hubs laced to dual 24" Doublewides with 3" Gazzi's. Run heavier air in the shock and firm spring on the Boxxer.

DH machine - Wheelset # 2 - Hugi FR f/r hubs laced to Mavic 823 with Arrow UST 2.5 "tires. Bit less air in the shock and medium spring up front.

Takes about 1 hour to flip over from one to the other, mostly due to taking the rear end apart and flipping over the shock. The bike is awesome at both if the wheelset and suspension is dialed.

the only thing that will serve you better than a Brooklyn Race-link would be a Brooklyn Hit-man. Nothing will make you happier, and more confident, and keep on performing year after year.

im confused i could have sworn the demo 9 had a slacker head angle than the demo 8? at least it did last time i looked at the specialized site. am i missing something here?
That's what I thought...

I heard the Demo 8 was the freeride bike that isn't so good at high speed stuff.

I thought the Demo 9 was the DH bike for racing with its slacker HA.

You heard wrong. Specialized's website lists the wrong numbers on the 9, it's like 66.5 degree HA at the steepest I think. The 9 is way taller and more upright than the 8, I've compared a 9 back-2-back with my 8 and you can see the difference.
