 Thats rad. Thanks for the shot. :thumb:

Obviously [given the rasta neckband], he had been munching on some fine BC shrubbery when overcome by an urge for a pint and burger. Can't blame a bear for that.

They didn't put him down or anything like that did they? :(

I have seen that bear (unless there are more than one with that same colored collar) a few times. He acts a lot more like a dog than a bear...just kind of hangs out at the trail head and stuff.

I did read in the Whistler Question a few days back when I was there that they did have to 'destroy' a couple of bears that were getting into campgrounds and causing a ruckus though.

When I was there a few weeks ago there was bear chilling under the bridge that goes to the glc drops. I accidentally took the easy line that goes under the bridge and I scared him out and under the big glc drop. Like ten people went right over the top of him while he ran from the medium glc drop to the big one. After about five minutes of him freaking out he ran over the other side of the glc drops. It was pretty crazy. I think I have seen that bear in the pics too, unless there are more than one with that collar.

FYI: there is no such thing as brown bears, Brown bears are Grizzly bears in every sense of the word. Stay away from "brown" bears not that black bears are any better but Grizzly's are much much more moody and dangerous. Espacily if they are in populated area's because they have now learned you are a food source and they will eat wether you give them food or they have to strip it off your bones.

Black bears actually come in lots of different colours ranging from brown to reddish brown to black. A black bear doesn't have to be "black". You're right about Grizzly's being more volatile, but as far as I know there are nowhere as many Grizzly's that range this far west anymore, and it's unusual to see them at lower elevations this time of year - they're usually much higher up in the alpine. It's mostly Blacks. And I hate to be a downer, but this is really very sad to me. The more we develop in the native habitats of wildlife, the more animals will be destroyed at our expense, both directly and indirectly. Now I'm totally a hypocryte because I play in this area too, but this bear is collared because it has become habituated to humans and their garbage, which is an easy food source. The sad reality is that this bear is unlikely to survive, because it's only given so many chances of being relocated to the wild and returning to town, which it will, before it's destroyed. I find that heartbreaking, not cute or funny. Sorry. Just my opinion.

This is true. I do agree that we are making it increasingly more difficult for animals to live. I dont want to see the bear destroyed. But if it does become a danger to people its necessary.

Time to go on a bit of a liberal bleeding heart rant, but I've heard this before and it really pi$$e$ me off. Why is it that because humans are able to put together cohesive sentences and have the ability to alter our environment to such an extent that it's no longer recognizable (we're are the only species on this planet "smart" enough to do that), that we have this opinion that we are THE most important species on this planet? Especially when on the geological scale of time we've been here but for a brief moment.

Every time I go out into the wilderness I am conscious and aware that I'm entering into other animals' domain. That is a risk that I consciously take when I leave my house and go for a ride or a run or hike or whatever. If I were to be attacked by a bear or cougar or any other creature, it's VERY likely because I've done something to startle it (99% of the time, if they know we're there, we sure as hell won't know they are), and I would plead with all my heart that that animal NOT be destroyed because more likely than not if it attacked me it was protecting it's own interests - offspring, food source, etc.

Eventually, as our population grows and we invade more and more space (again, I'm not ignorant to the fact that I'm a hypocryte here because I'm living and playing in this paradise too), more and more animals will die at our expense. And not just directly by our destroying them because they attacked one of the members of our community, but indirectly because our roads and developments are fragmenting their habitat and cutting them off from viable food sources and mates and reducing their home ranges. This is a devastating thing for mankind, and we are ultimately destroying the very thing that draws us to our natural areas in the first place.

But again, this is just my opinion. I respect that you are obviously allowed yours:)
