Personally I think helmet laws are ridiculous, adults should have the right to choose what safety gear they wear.

I wonder when exactly, frantic monthers took over city governments?

helmet laws suck. If you are an adult you should have the choice. same goes for seatbelts. I have had 2 motorcycle wrecks helmet on both times and did there jobs, but it still should be a choice!

I don't exactly get why you feel this way. But, not wearing a helmet is stupid and if someone else is going to pay just a part of the hospital bill, then you have to wear a helmet.

There are so many other things to worry about.. I think if someone doesnt wear a helmet then they should ride really fast all the time.. I do wear a helmet, but it shouldnt be a law.. a**&@%*s.. :nopity: It should be a choice.. As far as medical bills, send all the illigal aliens home that are taking our money cause they wont pay the hospitals , then our insurance and medical costs would go down.. I think its cool to smash your brains if ya want to.. Plus it gives the ems system something to do other than take care of illigal aliens..

I'm all about bike safety but I don't promote or advocate giving the right to cops to harass cyclist. If they want to improve cycling safety how about they start with a harder drivers test, a bike lane, or helmet safety campaign. I don't think a cop should have the right to stop anyone obeying taffic laws over the age of 18 because some non cyclist politician found another way to collect more citation fees. Just my 2 cents.

Exactly - nobody wants to foot the bill for your irresponsible behavior. Until it can be guaranteed people will pay 100% of their medical service bills for their safety choices, IMHO they should have no choice but to use them.

Helmet laws are good. Wearing a helmet is good.
Would you want to be ticketed when you rode your bike down to corner store sans helmet?

I thought the same thing.

When are people going to 1) take responsibility for their actions and 2) realize that more laws do NOT make our society better?

I agree with trialsmasta about the harder driving test, etc. Motorists need to be more aware of cyclists and respect our rights. We're tolerated less than slow service at their favorite fast food drive-through.

Also, in Austin last year 13 cyclists lost their lives due to automobile collisions. None of them would have been save by wearing a helmet.

If you feel strongly about this topic either way, feel free to email Bruce Todd (the polititian pushing the legislation) at btodd@brucetoddpublicaffairs.com.

I happened to disagree with him and communicated my thoughts to him (respectfully, mind you). He actually took the time to respond directly to my email explaining his reasoning.

I still disagree, but all I can really do is voice my opinion.

California's motorcycle helmet was declared unconstitional finally August 18, 2006. I never wear a helmet my Ducati as we now have the law being taken off the books thanks to a District court from enforcing a law that was so vague to comply with. This is great news

i wouldnt like the fact that you are somewhat forced to wear a helmet but ive seen some pretty scary pictures and heard some nasty storys for reasons why you should always wear a helmet. if i was just riding around for leisure then i dont think i would really want to wear one let alone get a ticket for it.
