Cigars are like coffee, there are dozens of verieties from mild to strong, and different ways for each type of tabaco to be rolled, producing a different flavor. If you don't know what type he likes I would get him a sampler. check out http://www.cigarsinternational.com/mcatDisp.asp?cat=6 they have several different sample packs. Of course an authentic Cuban Cohiba, or Romeo Et Juliet is great, but nearly impossible to find

is ALWAYS key I say...
CUBANS are always the best but you're not going to get a box of good Partagas Habana Churchill Deluxes for under $175 a box bootleg.

Sorry I can't help you find them. It would be illegal to so so. But I have had them and I can say it's the best cigar I have EVER had in my life. When Castro dies, I'm on a plane to Cuba just to pack my suitcase full of cigars and come home the same day.

Good brands if you want to know are Partagas, Cohiba, Macanudo.

I can recommend a cheap gift for your buddy that will be the BEST buy and best baby macanudo he will ever have for the money.

Try mikescigars.com. Call the 800 number and ask for a box of Macanudo seconds, (wrapper falls off in packaging and they're boxed up a hundred at a time rather than open each celophane wrapper and put them BACK on the conveyor belt and RE-STICKER the logo and RE-WRAP the cigar) box of 100 is like $28 dollars SHIPPED! Order the CONNETICUITS! NOT the Cameroons. They're very mild and VERY good tasting.

Upmans, and Romeo Y Juliettas are good, but watch out for counterfeits, there seem to be a lot of them out there for these brands.

I, also, prefer the Macanudos if I am going to be spending ~$5-10 per cigar. I can find them at a more reasonable price more consistently and fresher than any other decent brand around here. I have tried almost everything under the sun from the Arturo Fuentes, Upmans, Montecristos, Partagas, Romeo y Jullietta, CAOs...you name it. I started smoking cigars during late high school to get me off the nasty cigarettes and have continued doing so ever since. I have smoked both here and abroad, where you can find Habanos like Cohibas, etc. for a reasonable price. I used to buy the Cohiba Habanos in Germany by the box and although very good, they're certainly not worth what people pay for them here in the States just to be able to wave them beneath the elevated noses in the humidor room of various cigar bars and VIP rooms throughout the USA.

By the way, a good gift for a cigar smoker doesn't HAVE to be a cigar. Related accessories make fine gifts, like humidors, clippers/knippers, pipe-n-cigar lighters, lead crystal ashtrays, air-filtration/ionizers/ozone generators, etc.

Here are two links to wear out during your search-

Hahahaha...I just knew some wiseass was going to post up some Phillies or Middletons or some other type of nasty, artificially bound cut-filler machine-rolled turd. The Backwoods caught me off guard, though.

Here's a little tip for the cigar novices-
If you don't have to use a clipper to smoke it, you probably shouldn't unless you really like the taste of cheap cigar sap.

Nobody said it yet, but what about Nat Sherman?
Nice stuff, and they have a selection of gift items you can order.
A buddy I helped out got me this (from the Nat Sherman site):
The Metropolitan Gift Selection
A beautiful presentation of the Metropolitan Selection. Two Metropolitan Naturals and Two Metropolitan Maduros equipped with our very own cedar taper matches. Absolutely the perfect gift!
It was $40, and the cigars were really nice!

Go anyway, it's not that hard. Among my highlights is taking a tour of the Partagas factory in Havana and grabbing a box of Cohibas on the way out to enjoy later with a couple glasses of good old rum.

Actually The backwoods are pretty damn good, they just have a lingering Phunk about them. But i must say, i like the gold wrapper ones, not the black wrapper.

A really nice Cigar if your wanting specifics, Macanuda Hampton court is about 10 bucks, Decent in size, without being too Big to handle, get a nice smooth Pull, never harsh. Can find them most anywere. If your just not sure after all this, just go to a Golf coarse clubhouse, they usually have alot of goodies there
