Fellow Norcalians,

Just getting back into riding after almost a 1 1/2 year hiatus. Took the ol' RFX out to give her a good cleaning and checkup and noticed my old michy 24's are experiencing the dreaded sidewall crackage. So its time for some new rubber...

I've always wanted to try the highrollers, but now I see that the Kenda blue groove/nevegal combo is receiving lots of praise. What do you guys think is best for hardpack with the occaional loose dirt on top of hardpack is(007 type trail)?

Also, any recommendations for a good, mid-priced 5-6" single crown fork? I currently am riding on a 2002 black boxxed boxxer from my DH days and am looking to lighten up the RFX to do more trail riding as my shuttling days are over.

Thanks,

Duff-Man

I have been using the Nevegals, and I wouldn't mind switching to a Blue Groove in the rear.

Forks? I would avoid Manitou for sure, no matter how tempting the price.

Rockshox Reba's might be in your price range, or the Marz All-Mountain series. If you want a 20mm, then Pike it.

I roll the nevegals...they hook up in loose dirt, in hard pack, in mud, anything I can dish out. I run a 2.5" front with a 2.35" rear on my FXR

Nevegals rock, super grippy, really fast, and pretty light if you get the single ply ones. I also found that Specialized Chunders are really nice.

What's up Luc? How ya been? Nice review on the barracudas, now I'm really confused, lol. Still have the Suby although I don't get to race her as much these days. By the way, how do you like your pike 454 and what is the main difference between that and the 426?

yeah, the chunders are almost identical to the high rollers. they were designed by the same person but the chunder 2.3s are heavier then the highroller 2.5s

WTB Weirwolfs front and rear. Mutano 2.4's for something really hardpacked, but the Weirwolfs are still great on hardpack. Tire pressure is key with the Weirwolfs. Too much and you'll break loose in the corners way too fast. Too little and you go slow. But once you get your pressure set (I run 35f/40r on 2.5 DH's) you'll be stizzoked.

I ride front and rear 2.5 High Rollers...

They are great for plowing forward, or carving... But when it comes to smooth flowing back and forth, they bite at the wrong time and force your bike to carve. If you're used to them, it's all good.
