Has anyone used a Yeti AS-X for downhilling? I know it is the bike they have targetted as their "freeride" bike, but I was wondering how it would do for DH!

I am not a downhiller, but really enjoyed the stuff at Snowshoe including the DH course (and may with practice get into DH'ing) I know some of you have ridden SC Bullits while FreeRiding, and some have even DH'd it, I was looking to start putting a FR/DH (in that order) bike together and wanted to see if anyone had any oppinions!

I can get Santa Cruz or Yeti, but since SC isn't building the Bullit right now.... I was leaning toward Yeti. The bullit, and AS-X are in my price range.

thanks in advance!

There's a lot of asx threads on here. Do a search.

In short: NEVER run an asx in 7 inch mode (too steep, bb to high). With a 6 inch fork it makes an excellent mini-dh bike. It has a "you are riding the bike" feel instead of a "the bike is riding you" feel you can get with a full on DH bike.

I run mine in 7" cause I don't know any different (Super-T up front.) It's my first big suspension bike and has definitely done me very well. For comparison, I ride her as much as I can on Whistler and there's nothing there that the bike couldn't handle. I do want to try a lower BB though just to see how much faster I could get through berms etc but I'm not smooth enough on jumps/drops to sacrifice my extra inch of travel yet.

I have run mine with a 7 inch dual crown and in the seven inch mode. I use it for DH. I really isn't a pure DH bike, but pedals better and is manuverable on tighter trails. It should be fine.

The bike feels completely different between 6-7" settings, one's rising, the other is falling rate. Give both a shot without changing any settings on your shock...you'll be amazed at the difference. For full on DH, maybe the 7"would would be nice, but for an all around bike, very tough to beat the MX bike feel of the 6" setting

how's the 6" feel through rockgardens and rutted out areas? I think I'll try the 6" setting up at Whistler next wed and thur :) If anything, I suspect I'll be catching a little more air on tables

The AS-X was one of my favorite bikes I ever owned, it jumped like a dream, did 6-10 footers like nothing, and pedaled OK too.

But when I took it to Plattekill, its shortcomings as a DH bike were apparent. It was too tall and the head angle was too steep, and the lack of a bolt-on rear axle was very apparent.

I loved that bike like no other, but it's straight up a freeride play bike, not a DH bike.

Dancin' over rocks n' roots!
I sold my DH bike (SGS DH Pro) and bought an AS-X because I thought it was much better suited to my style of freeriding and DHing. I am not going off big drops or jumps and have found it to be much more nimble (lighter, easier to maneuver) for someone my size. I definitely notice a difference on really steep stuff, but some of my hesitation lies in the fact that I didn't DH at all last year and I am not used to the bike yet.

Edit: My husband has a bullit w/a Super T and loves it for both DH and Freeride.

Tried it in 6" the last two days in Whistler. The travel was missed when it got super rutty, but I was still able to power through everything of course and felt a little faster than the 7" settings through berms. The biggest difference was on tabletops...the rear end pops up so much easier. I kept all the shock settings the same except I slowed down the rebound a few turns.
