Hello everyone!

Am buying a used Heckler and am talking to two guys who each have a Heckler frame, but each have two different sets of components & accesories on them. Which one should I buy, or, which one is the best deal with the best components?

BIKE ONE:

6 month old Santa Cruz Heckler for $2,200. No big scratches, dents or marks, the chain slap hasn't even made a mark yet.

Fork is 05 marzocci drop off on it

It comes with a DHX Air (2006)

the rear shock is a fox dhx air, best rear shock fox makes

pedals - crank bros 50/50's <---best pedal on the market. around $100 new.

Marzocci Drop Off 130mm on it. The fork is in fine shape, im am a pretty light guy, so my forks tend to stay in good condition

wheels - azonic outlaws - that is wheel, spokes, and hubs, all new.

e-thirteen bashguard

The SRAM all mountain kit, check out santa cruzs website for the specs on that kit…aka… X-9 AM "kit"

also see my brakes, avid juicys, best wet brakes ive ever had.

BIKE 2:

Wheels: New Sun Single wides withan XT rear hub and a Dia-Tec front 200mm thru w/ a conversion kit for a standard quik release

handle bar - new specialized alloy with a p3 stem
Marzocchi Front Shock Pump and a rear Wrench Force Shock Pump

hmmm...
i'd go with the secound one and put the extra $200 tward a better shock. 5th element feels like styrofoam. drop off 1 is a little better but still nowhere near the 66rc and a new shock will be cheaper then a new fork. brakes are about equal, drive train is about equal, wheels, ect.
oh and 50/50 are over priced and mediocer, try a pair of welgo B-37s.

i never had any problems with my Heckler the 5th Element felt great and never had any issues. Fox makes great stuff but i think the air rear shocks are a little picky to maintain and can give you problems if your into riding bigger stuff. the 66rc has it all over the z1 dropoff, lots of adjustments and travel, i ran a 66rc on mine and loved it. the z1 dropp off is ok but you will quickly grow out of it and be looking for something else. the rest is comparable on both bikes, nice stuff on each. i think i would lean toward the second one as well and still have $200 for upgrades.

I like the second bike. Can't go wrong with a 66 and I'm not a fan of dhx airs(too many people complaining about them).

On a side note, any of you heckler guys know the eye to eye and stroke length for the rear shock? Im thinking about giving my buddy one of my old ones.

Stay away from 5th element they are out of the mountain bike business and getting service and parts will start to become a nightmare soon

Get Fox Suspension, no doubt. We sent back close to 60 Progressive shocks for rebuilds this summer, up to 4-5 a week at one point. I think we've sent back maybe 4-5 fox rear shocks all year. The Marzocchi stuff probably feels the best out of the box when you push on the bike, but blows through the travel when pushing corners or taking big hits. The fine tuning of the Fox is pretty much unmatched except maybe a few top shelf Rock Shox forks, they've really come around in the last two years.

Yes, if you haven't already, get the second bike. Mostly because of the fork, all else being equal. The Drop Off really sucks in comparison, more than the 5th sucks compared to the DHX Air (that margin of suckage is quite debatable). Plus, you save $200. If you don't like the 5th, get a different rear shock. You'll be happy you went anodized too, that's a huge upgrade IMO.
Oh, and the 50/50's are NOT the best flat pedal on the market, though they might be one of the prettiest. I would recommend some Shimano DX-30's (whatever the flat pedal they make is called), some Tioga flats or some Specialized bronze colored pedals. There's more to a pedal that pins and shape, and those three all have that plus great internals, which can't be said for most of the pedals on the market. But pedals are minor.
And FYI, neither of those bikes would go for anywhere near those prices on ebaY, so honestly it might be worth an eye to watch there too.
