Tucson, beatch!
Is it too early to start this thread? :D Been out riding the course and getting psyched about 2007, and registration opens in a few days. How many of you are coming out again?

One of my team-mates from last year and I are thinking of doing a two-person team. Anyone have experience with that? Is it better to alternate do two-laps each for more rest time in between, or what?

Doubling up on laps would be the best way to go. Person riding doesn't get too tired and the other person has some time to eat and sleep.
I too hope to do it again. Hell I might as well say as long as we can get an East Coast team together I'm in.

If doug's going duo, and peter can't get time from baby duty, we might have to let west coasters like ghostrider or T-dog join the Beast.

I raced a duo 12 hour this year, we did double laps but the course was only 5 miles, and most of our laps were under 40 min's. So a double there would be equilavant to a single at OP.

IMO at OP, alteranting singles will be the best bet. You would have an hour at your camp, thats enough time to do anything (well, except sleep, but sleep's overrated). If you do doubles those 2nd laps will be way freaking slow.

Glad to see everyone is still around and another year older and maybe another year slower-except for maybe Westy. I just won my first "expert" race of the year. It helped when the two fastest guys didnt show up for the final race of the year.

I have been thinking about the Old Pueblo since the last race. I met Echo, Westie and a couple of others the day after the last race. I was almost the last person to leave the campground. I have been thinking of setting up a couple of days early next year and doing a little training with June Bug and some the other "seniors."

I will probably be looking for a team in December. I probably run at about a 17- 18 lap pace. A couple of years ago one of the fast teams called me looking for a racer and when I told them my age the phone went dead for a couple of minutes.

I camped across from the guys who won the two man last year. They alternated laps except that one of the guys was one of the fastest racers out there and he ran a couple extra laps. So if you want to win one guy has to be fast and one guy has to be crazy fast. The guys who won last year only knocked out 20 laps. If two very solid experts under 40yoa entered they could probably win.

I ran five laps on our four man team. It was 1:15, 1:17, 1:19, 1:24 and 1:29. My best lap was probably the 1:19 at night. I think I could knock off a 1:12 if I was the second man out. The 1:15 was the lead lap and I ended up pretty much walking to the bike since I cant run very well. My age is a secret:biggrin: but my son was second in the state in expert 30-39.

Hey Douglas if you come out early I might be setting up camp a week early. Its still early in planning but since i have 3 years down I am going for a fourth.

Impressive!!

I have done OP in '05 (5 coed) & '06 (4 male) and somehow this year I was able to do one of my laps under 1:10 (barely, but it was under!!)

Its a long time off, but we mentioned a Wed to Wed trip; me, my ringer & 1 crew person.

Hope you get someone fast for your "ringer." Like I said the team that won last year had a fast guy like you and then a crazy fast guy. If you looked at the way they ran laps it appeared that whenever they started to slip the real fast guy would pick up an extra lap. It was very competive with the first four teams within an hour of each other. If you get to 19 laps you probably get to the podium.

unless aliens land in the desert and take all the other teams crazy fast guys racing duo, a podium is out of the question

In case somebody is wondering what the Old Pueblo kind of looks like for camping here is a pic. Its a lot of fun. Ok heres the gold standard for anyone looking to race in the Old Pueblo.

If your under 35 years of age run a lap in 1:06, if you are female run it in 1:12. For everyone over 35 years of age add 30 seconds for every year over 35. Getting old sucks doesnt it. . Douglas, I think 18 laps might get you to the podium. It definitely sucks for training though if you have to figure snow in. I know 90 minutes is about all I can take of the crap.

What are you talking about? Gold standard?? Have you looked through the '06 results???

I am female, over 35 years and raced OP '06 solo. My fastest lap was 1:06

Here's the results

I think Douglas has it right Lynda "freak" I am going to stick with the figures because those are realistic goals for most bikers under 35. You had a nice race last year. I thought your race and Gregg and His Go-Hoes as well as the guy on the Single Speed were probably the most "distinusihed" rides out of all the racers. Goodluck in 2007. BTW your competition "June Bug" will be in training soon. Not sure if she is going SS or not.

I have plans on doing the single speed thing again this year with help from coach Lynda W. Stop by and visit me and my hubby at the race site. We will be there from 11-20 until the race.

I am guessing then that you will be getting in around 10 laps with Lynda W's help?:monkeydance: . I havent decided what exactly I will be doing. I think I will be riding a full suspension rig. Since you have a coach I guess the legendary "Desert Dan" will be my coach. I might be interested in two man. I think I could do nine laps-maybe. Hopefully start the training around Dec 1 with lots of trips up to Montezuma maybe even a ride out to Palomar.

How about all you other RM's anyone else doing some early desert training? Its the best place to be in the winter. Everyone who has been out to the Pueblo a couple of times should know June. Part of the race course is named after her-"Junebug". Its a part of the course like the "ditches" that people have an opinion about. :)

I love that Junebug section of the course. I always figured the person and the trail were related somehow but I never knew which was named after which :D

Solo cat is full. I'm thinking of volunteering since it appears I'm about 70 years old by borregokid's standards. Seriously I run 1:25-1:35(night lap with a crash). Asthma and old age aren't a good combination.

What is the consensus on the expo area at the race? I'm thinking I need a quick vacation in February. Do the racers/spectators get much time to peruse the vendors?
