Okay for all you guys and gals that have done this for many laps. How many jerseys/shorts do you take out there? Since my buddy and I are considering a 2-man team this year, I am thinking about my cycling shorts. I only have 3 pair... and really can't afford to go out and buy one for every lap I'm going to do.

So what do you do? Wash them between laps? Wear them multiple times? What?

Microbes are your enemy. Use an antibacterial chamois cream and clean up the naughty bits with something like baby wipes.

I always seem to bring more than I need, just in case. But for my solo I brought 2 pairs of tights, 4 pairs of shorts and 6 jerseys (2 ls & 4 ss). Also, bring LOTS of socks. I think I brought 8-10 pairs...warm (smart wool) and regular. I think I changed more often than I needed to because it was so muddy and I was paranoid of the microbes.

Oh, and butt-butter is your friend!

Obviously if you do two man you need as much stuff as you have. I might wear two pairs of shorts running four man and two shirts. Thats only 6 hours of riding.

Two years ago at OP is one everyone got caught with not enough gear. It rained a good part of the 24 hours. The really smart teams had maybe four complete outfits of shorts and shirts per rider. A lot of teams were caught unprepared and left in the middle of the race.

If you need to dry your stuff, the best way is to put the stuff on a hanger and start up the engine on your car and put the heat on high and shut the doors. I tried the clothes in the oven trick on my RV and it was working great at 150 degrees. I tried 200 degrees and melted $100 worth of gear.

For the night laps I would make sure I had lots of polypro underwear. Its nice starting out with some warm clean stuff between you and the shorts. Three years ago two days before the race the temps dropped to 29 degrees and the wind was blowing 20 mph. The humidity was low but it was still cold. Figure temps in the 40's at night and the 60's in the day. The Epic site mentions 70's but I think thats for downtown Tucson. We are racing at elevation much higher than Tucson.

We were there that year and I was SO glad that I packed virtually all of my riding clothes.

Good Point!! I went through Far more socks than anything else. ! also a 2nd or 3 set of shoes is another good thing.
Definitely. I used lots of socks and I brought two pairs of shoes, 3 pairs of gloves and 2 different helmets too. The 2 helmets made the switch from day to night easier too as I had my light hardware all mounted on the spare helmet and I could easily make the swap.

Thanks all. I was there last year and was in good shape for clothing. But since I was on a 5-person co-ed I only did 4 laps total. I know I'm going to be doing more this year so i needed advice on gear.

Thanks!

Nam I am
I think you shouldn't wory about it so much.Just do as many laps as you have clothes for.Ha.
I have to agree with him, Take what you have and Make it work.

and of course a lot depends on teh race course , Churn & Burn where it down poured the day before was a muddy course ,

this should give you some Idea why we went through so many socks, and that was one lap!!!

and looking at the Morning pics there are sme people wearing interesting sock, ( me included ) , Wool, no socks ,mis matched , I was even wearing my Water proof Neoprene socks I usually use for below freezing , its all I had left.
