I'd love to get my hands on a set.

Some marblehead over here DH races a 1st gen V-10 with Supermonsters and airlines. Looks like a nitrous powered motorbike...

How did that system work? Also, has anyone else seen electronic shifting? I saw it on a Cannondale cyclocross bike a few years ago, but didn't get any specifics.

There was a guy racing Paris-Roubix with the prototype Campy electronic shifting system. I heard it was the final test before the stuff goes into production.

Mavic did a few versions of electronic shifting. It was crap. Airlines blew.
Cables may not appear to be the best way to change gears, but they sure do work properly, and consistently. And that's what matters...

Yeah....UCI....a bunch of grumpy old men who want bicycles to look like they did in 1908. Refuse any kind of inovation. Think about when time trail was interesting because the big brands would try to produce different kinds of "super-bikes"...that was awesome to look at....but they are banned too.........soooooo concervative...

My old shop in AZ had a set a bunch of years ago. I wonder what ever happened to them. They sure sat there in the case for a long time. I'm sure no one paid the $700 price, and I'll bet they just walked with one of the employees.

Ohh yaeh....Mavic Mechtronics.....it looked cool anyway (-:
I know a roadie that lives down the street from me, and he has a bunch of cool vintage bikes. One of his bikes is an old timetrial bike, with a 24 inch front wheel. He bought the mavic deralier for 20 bucks off of a guy that was selling them on closeout, and I must admit that it is pimp, and he says that it works really good.

Since someone bumped this thread anyway, I am going to add some spam.

If someone is really desperate for some really one off parts from when DH racing made money, I have a set of airlines with a few spare parts and even some NOS stickers. I let them go for $200 otherwise I'll continue to keep them on my shelf in the shop and pull them out whenever the bike nerd talk starts.

Was kind of akward looking; not a bad idea, but I guess the production cost must have been to high for mass marketing

Not where I'd like
friend of mine has had the system on his ventana for years now

definitely a "oooh and ahhh" thing though, but it does work, its a pretty interesting feel in the levers

My first DH bike had the system... I got a deal on it, and that happened to be what came as the shifting system. Basically, when it worked, it was the cleanest shifting derailleur that I have ever felt. However, I had it in the shop every week, and it still didn't work. Also, you could only pump it up with a shock pump, and had to do so before every ride. So, again a good idea, but not incredibly practical.

Towing the party line.
Exactly. At the time it was an incredible product, and blew everything else away. Now the shifting would be about as nice as X0, but with nowhere near the reliability. Lots of small parts, hoses, and limited shifts per canister. Oh, and you'd need a water bottle mount on your DH frame.
