"THE JEREMY McGRATH INVITATIONAL GOES OFF

Last weekend DC helped sponsor the Jeremy McGrath Invitational, a made for TV supercross race that took over the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. The event doesn’t air until October 22, so here’s a preview of the two nights of action:

Jeremy welcomes everyone to his race on Friday night.

There were so many unique elements and so much racing over the two nights. Jeremy structured the event as “supercross redefined”: there were 20-man supercross style races with motocross style scoring, tight head to head single elimination battles, and freestyle demos each night. Add all that to four towers that spit flames throughout the racing, plus a new track design that left some of the riders thinking twice—there were large metal FMX jumps integrated into the track design.

Friday night got off to a sour start when MC, while trying to qualify, took a spill and cracked his C7 vertebra and broke his toe. He’ll be fine, but the unfortunately he was forced to sit out for the rest of the racing.

Check it out: Travis is flipping a SX bike, not a freestyle bike.

Besides the $500,000 on the line, the most unique part of the Jeremy McGrath Invitational was the 2-man, two-lap head-to-head battles. Many riders commented that it was a little scary because you could be taken out with just one move. Every race had a wild cat and mouse start as the two riders jousted for the holeshot, then whoever took the first turn would have to race perfectly for the next 1 ½ laps to earn the checkered flag. There were a couple aggressive battles throughout, but it was really all about the holeshot.

It was during these bracket battles on Friday night that Pastrana pulled a supercross first… he backflipped during the race! (Remember he tried to backflip the Daytona finish line earlier this year and got in a lot of trouble from the AMA for it.) He was leading the race after two turns and just couldn’t resist throwing a backflip as he hit the first metal jump. The move cost him the win, but it definitely got the crowd psyched.

Nate and Travis with side by side flips. Nate, no handed backflip; Travis, super flip.

In addition to all the great racing, there were two FMX demos each night, and these were definitely crowd favorites. DC team members Travis Pastrana, Nate Adams and Adam Jones were among the FMX riders—Travis and Nate even teamed up to for a couple side-by-side backflips! It was a good show because even though it was a demo, there was still a strong element of competition among the guys as they tried to one up each other. At the end of each night, the guys teamed up to put on a nac-nac train, a nice tribute to MC.

Kevin Windham was flawless over the weekend: he was undefeated in the head to head battles and went 1-1 in the main events to take home the inaugural Jeremy McGrath Invitational trophy and a huge brick of money. Kevin earned $185,000 for his efforts… not bad for a weekend that usually is an “off” weekend in motocross.

The Jeremy McGrath Invitational airs on October 22nd at 4:30 on NBC… tune in to see all the racing

Did anyone else watch it live on the Web? There was a dual battle between DV and Josh Grant that had to be the best motorcycle race I have ever seen.

I was a good race...it's a bummer that Jermey McGrath fractured his C7 during his own race.

WOW! Did anyone watch the race yesterday on NBC besides me? Josh Grant power sliding up the edge of the metal kicker was absolutely insance

Watching Pastrana backflip that thing on his initial qualifying run and basicly losing the race by doing it was just freaking stupid. I wanted to actually see him compete again..not clown. Grant is gonna eat people up next year.

I did see Grant's slide on the metal ramp--it was insane. That race, between Grant and DV, was probably one of the best races I have ever seen. What's even more amazing is that Grant was a four-stroke 250 and DV was on a 450...
