Is there any thing as Handicap parking etiquette?

He did the right thing cuz they shouldn't be parking in our spots.

that was sarcasm. And I agree. He should've left the handicapped spot available if it wasn't in inconvenience to him.

I rarely see all handicapped spaces taken. I would almost go as far as to say they are never all taken. It would irritate me to see a handicapped person parked in a regular spot in a packed parking lot.

I get your idea, but I think courtesy has it's limits. You snooze, you lose. Even if you're handicapped, no? (Amongst the handicapped at least...)

Maybe there should be grades of handicap spots related to the distance from the entrance. That would be an interesting experiment.

Costco is awesome. Of the 40 or so handicap spaces, more than half are filled by Escalades (or similar crap wagons) driven by obese people.

They cart out tubs of mayo and huge blocks of bacon and sausage after loading up on pizza and churros at the food counter.

We are a nation of fat, selfish slobs.

Personally I enjoy parking far away especially at Walmart. It's like a petting zoo the entire walk to the door and it's free of charge!

As far as ettiquette goes, the only thing that really bothers me is when someone parks in the wheelchair accessible handicapped space, when they don't have a wheelchair and there is another regular handicap parking space right next to it. Are there any rules regarding that??

I have a fat, lazy aunt who has a handicapped hang tag that she got specifically for driving my 90+ year old grandfather around but she uses it all the time. She wonders why she keeps gaining weight.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I saw some perfectly able or morbidly obese person slap a handicap placard up on their dash and waltz into a store from the handicapped parking. It seems to be a very normal thing here in SoCal. What a bunch of selfish jerkoffs.

Yeah, it's called common courtesy and is very lacking in this day and age.

Yes you must have a vehicle that has wheelchair provisions...You can technically get a ticket but it's rarely enforced. Now days just about anyone can get their doc to get them a plate so I think the whole program is pathetic...D

I work in the field of people with disabilities and had a coworker (not in my direct office) who used her x-boyfriend's parking sticker to suck up the closer parking space, despite her lack of any disabling condition. So, I got a sticker from a disability rights group that peels off to show the sticker towards you through the windshield. It said, "This parking space is reserved for people with disabilities and jackasses. Which one are you?" That stopped her from using the space!

Since we're on the topic already, what about handicapped bathroom stall etiquette? Ever finish up your paperwork in the lavish roomy stall only to exit and find the lavatory vacant but for a guy with cane braces quivering and grimacing from being about to wind one into his drawers?

Good point.
I would NEVER park in a handicap space, but I $hit up their stalls every time. Me lika elbow room.
I would evacuate quickly though if someone rolls up on me.

call me an asshole, but if i saw someone with handicapped plates park in a regular spot in a very crowded lot while the handicapped spots are still open i would be annoyed. i mean, if they take the last normal spot because it is closer than the handicapped spot i would be pissed off because now i am stuck without a parking spot since the only open ones are for handicapped people.

i could care less if the parking lot had many open spaces though.

hey hey, what do you want me to do get exercise on the way to get exercise? Thats ridiculous.

The person in the car doesnt actually have to be handicapped to have the tag. As a care taker of somebody that person is handicapped that person is entitled to the tag and and is able to use it when taking care of business of the HC person even when they are not present. That being said prolly 50% of the people I see with them have no need for them and are abusing the system. The more of these people that attain these tags the more need there appears to be for more HC parking spaces.
We had a judge get busted recently for abuse of the tag. She had attained it legally because she was the care taker of her mother who was HCed BUT she was still using the tag 6 months after her mom died. I find ZERO humor in people who abuse this system.

My sister in law is in a wheel chair do to a stroke ( at age 42) It's been a real eye opener to work with her when she comes to visit, whether it's an elevator full of able-bodied people who could take the stairs, clerks at stores who just don't "see" her, people who won't make room for a chair in an aisle... you name it... what an education ( in patience with asshats)

i went out with a chic in college who was in a wheel chair.

It is a huge eye opener to see it first hand. I know this isn't even close to being handicapped, but when I broke both my hands, you'd be surprised at how many jerks I had to encounter each day. I had people rolling their eyes and tapping their feet with their arms folded across their chest and sighing in line at the grocery store if it took a second longer for me to pay. I had people actually get pissed because I dropped my debit card once and couldn't pick it up without help. A lot of people can't be bothered to be patient, or god forbid, help out another person who is in a more challenged state of being than they are.

It was also very sad to see how difficult it is to access so many businesses and official buildings if you can't use your arms or are in a chair. I work on a big university campus, and 90% of the buildings I had trouble getting in and out of when I was laid up.

i try to always use the handicap stall. bigger, less likely to have piss splattered all over the walls, etc.
