How many cogs do you use? Also, if you can provide your gearing too, my friend and I are doing a little research.

Thanks!

I run a 11-32. The roadie clusters suck for the riding I do, not enough range.

have a 9sp 12-25. *want* a 5sp, 11-23.
I agree. On my DH Bike I have a 9sp Road cassette. But my chain rarely even sees the biggest cogs. I tend to stay on the middle to lower cogs. I think 5sp is about all you really need. I'd say 3 spds might be all you need for 4x as well. Just my .02 :clue:

11 - 32 but with the big locked out. Saves deraileurs and spokes.

So effectivly, 11 - 28, because we have hills and I do more than just DH racing.

8 speed 12-28 cogset. 36 tooth chainring I use the 26-14 and have the top and bottom cogs locked out. I rarely ever shift into the 13, maybe I used it once all year last year? heavy gears suck

I've got a 9 speed 32-12 but have it set up so I only have 8 speeds, probably 28-12 or something like that. Just changed the cable and that's how it ended up and couldn't be bothered fixing it.
I'd be happy with a 7 or 8 speed 28-12, as long as it shifted real nice and was easy to set up.
Run a 38 up front.

9spd - 11-34 with the 11 and 34 locked out. I'd like to change to a 34T front and an 11-32 cassette for next season.

my *ideal* setup:

new "dh race gruppo".
5 speed
at least X.9 or XT level
11-23 5-speed cassette *but*
use 9sp sizing for chain, cassette cogs
use narrower cassette body to allow for a less-dished wheel

might as well start that letter to Santa now... :disgust:

For those going with fewer gears than the norm, what are the motivating factors?

Also, anyone running axles larger than 12mm?
Any spacings other than 135 and 150?

As far as spacings go, Foes uses a custom Hadley 160x12mm rear hub on the DHS Mono and 2:1 Mono frames, and I believe there are a few manufacturers that make hubs that use 20mm rear axles. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

Out of 8 and 9,8 is by far the supperior system,7 was heaps better than that. Stronger.smoother, more reliable=Better. The only bennefit to 9 is smaller shifts and gear range but for DH neither of those are needed really.
For your latest question asked, why run what isn't needed.

the biggest is dishless rear wheel. super strong with more spoke angle.

also i like large steps in my shifts so i only have to click one at a time
not double or tripple.

mine is a WTB 12x135 they custom made for me. the ss hub can use the axle from the 9s 12x135 dh hub with only a slight mod.

more hubs need to be made this way. i have seen hopes SS it uses
a inner lock ring so 5 is no problem.

look around in 29er forum on mtbr for 1x5 1x6 they run super wide
spaced rear cogs. and a single ring up front.

lot of those guys run ss rear hubs with 5 cogs.

its the future for dh racing.

Racing:
Speeds: 9
Cassette: 11-25
Chain Ring: 36T for rocky courses, 38T for smooth, open fast courses.

Ultimately I'd like a Gearbox for shifting such as Honda's "Derailleur in a Box" or the PeteSpeed/Hayes Gearbox, or even the G-Boxx 2.

Gonna have to wait for that last one though.:brow:

I can't wait for the day when I can jump on my rig, blast down a race course, and not have to be overly conscious of the right rear side of my bike.

Running X.7 8 speed this year, 9 speed next for the new X.9.
12-32 with 38T
Iam going to jump on a gearbox bike in two years or so, when I can afford one.
