I had a 98 passat tdi wagon while living in EU. Great car, took a thrashing. The newer VW seem to have issues though but I have no personal experience with those.
My mom has a 9-3 convertible. It's OK, kinda small IMO but has good power (she lives in evergreen) and is fun to drive.
I'd look at a used volvo v70R wagon if I were you.

I have a 2.0T Passat Wagon. I wish it came with a stick. I wish it didn't have a push-button parking brake. I wish the steering was a bit tighter. I hate being mollycoddled by my automobile.

Other than that, the 2.0 is suprisingly zippy. It's fun to drive in 'S'. People are in awe of the automatic hatch. The interior is comfortable and is quite roomy, but the car doesn't feel big. Gets pretty good mileage when you don't have two downhill bikes on the roof. It's easy on the eyes as far as wagons go. And it's pretty well priced.

My couple of coppers, anyway.

Fool: Isn't the steering adjustable by the dealership - I think I read about that on VWvortex. Its electronically assisted so you can turn it up or down when its hooked up to the computer.

It is, but no dealer is going to do that for you. I'd have to find some schmuck with a VAG-COM, but that would mean talking to some guy who is as big a dork about VWs as I am about bicycles. :bonk:

have you driven both? what do you like? i'd also add the mazda 6 wagon onto that list -- i liked the mazda 6 sedan i drove today substantially more than the Audi A4 1.8T quattro sedan i also sampled...

Mazdaspeed3 would probably be pretty sweet too if you can give up some room :clue:

i just found out today that the Mazda 3 has MacPherson struts, while the Mazda 6 has double wishbones up front. double wishbones are a much better design, and possibly explain why i like how the 6 drives much more than the 3... there's also always the Mazdaspeed 6, although that's only in sedan form.

I owned a 6 while I lived in NZ, but I still think the 3 has better handling from the limited time I've driven it. I've never seen or driven the mazdaspeed3...

Wife drove both. Says she likes the Saab more than the VW. Saab is also offering a much better deal than VW.

Did you check out the Subaru Legacy? If you've been a IMBA member for at least 6 months you can get one at invoice if you give IMBA a call before you negotiate at dealer. VDC(stability control) is available on more subaru models this year (2007 MY) - the only major feature they were lacking.

if it's going to be her car, she likes the saab better, and the deal's better, what's the question? this one seems easy. :clue:

I bought a new wagon last year and both those cars where on my list.
My list was:
9-5 wagon (9-3 wasn't out yet)
Passat
V70
I was looking at all of those used

I ended up buying a new Mazda 6 wagon. It was easy to get in a manual. It has tons of power. It takes regular cheap gas. I paid about $20500 for a absolutely loaded car.
My only gripe is that it's a bit low. With a sportworks on it, it drags on driveways.
It gets kinda poopy mileage but all those cars do. I'm used to a vw tdi and my f350 diesel which got 19mpg and could carry 6 bikes/6 people.

Otherwise, I have no issues. The auto is a very nice/efficient 6sp. I have 11k miles on it with zero main other than syn oil. I just drove it 800miles in driving snow this weekend and it did awesome with stock tires.
