I want a trail bike that can take some abuse and I'm getting tired of lugging the 50+ Lb Stinky around.

I've narrowed it down to these two:

Or

is either really a bad choice???

I think the Transition is a sexier bike, but I know about Kona and how they stand behind their stuff. I'd go Kona.

Whichever one gives you the best component spec. for the money. They're practically the same bike.

NORCAL is the hizzle
Between the two I'd go Transition but they are pretty similar. Ride each and go with the one that fits better. If you can't tell, pick a color you like.

The '07 coilair feels pretty sweet. It feels like a mini DH bike. Low BB, short stays and a slack HA.

Now climbing might be an issue since lowering the fork will put the pedals into serious rock clipping height

how does a stinky get to weigh 50 lbs? you have a monster T on that? i don't even think my DH bike weighs that much, and it's hardly light.

the transitions are kinda heavy frames if my friend's dirt bag was any indication.

I just checked the numbers.
13.7" BB on the coilair.
13.3" on the Preston.

What about putting the Stinky on a diet?
Fox 36 RC2
lighter wheelset

That might not be a bad idea, and save me a grip o' dough.

Lose the Diabolus, go to 2.3 tires instead of 2.5 & 2.7 with slimed Maxxis downhill tubes, DHX air shock, etc.

I dunno if I could live without my Azonic Outlaws though.

slimed DH tubes? wow, the heaviness!
Go tubeless for big savings.

You can save ~2 pounds off the front end with the 36 switcharoo
The tubeless will drop a ~1.5 pounds of rotating mass. That will feel like more savings too.

$925.00 for an RC2...
$425.00 for a DHX 5 air...

I might save more by taking DRB's advice...
Skip the DHX air.
Tubeless will save more weight anyhow and its only $65 for a Stans kit.
You aren't paying retail are ya?!

Either is nice. What kind of warranty does each have?

I would not sweat the Outlaws. They are not stupid heavy. I have been thinking about lighter wheels, but I am not sure I want to have any flex again.

I had my Stinky up to a healthy 68ish, it was built for battle though.
specs, please. i call bullcocky. the only massively heavy bikes i've seen like that are crazy built (avy MTN-8 fork, burly steel frames like a hood or brooklyn, etc) for huckster use only.

i just can't see how you can transform a stinky into something weighing almost 70 pounds.

You could have a rack mounted with a spare bike on it.

Stinky 9 frame - 14lbs
Monster T - 12lbs
Atom Lab trail pimp rims (the old style before they lightened them) on Ringles - 10ish
Kona clump cranks - 5lbs
Hayes HFX 9's
Nokian Gazzalodi 2.7 with DH tubes - a few lbs each
Gusset bar and stem
SDQ saddle w/10mm solid cro-mo rails w/ crossbars

I'm not proud of how heavy it was, it was a pig, I could still climb with it though.
