mounting your shifter in places other then handlebar

ok well i want to chop my bars down even more, but the shifter is in the way (and no im not going SS at this moment) ive seen people mount them to seat tube ect and i was wondering what mods i would have to do to get this to work as my seat tube is larger then the clamp that my shifter pod has? or possibly other places to mount the shifter. any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Really it just comes down to finding a piece of tubing on your bike that will accomodate the shifter clamp. Then cut your cable down........or just go SS :poster_oops:

why not go singlespeed? i know you said you didnt have interest in this but you obviously arent shifting that much if you need to mount the shifter somewhere else. I was a anti singlespeed til i really started riding it alot, now i would have it any other way on dj/park.

Yeah, you are going to get a lot of SS bias around here... but, it's true, the best place for your shifter is the trash. :lighten:

I'm sure one of the dudes around here can help you out.

Definately. Best thing I've done for park/street/DJ, even with a ton of hills around me.

Check out the Mongoose Ritual, it has a mount like where a water bottle would normally go I think (that is if you're set on gears).

im guessing your running Oversized bars right now? that would be the reason you can cut them down anymore without having problems. you mite want to consider getting a 25.4 stem and Bars if this is the case. you can cut them down further.

also, Cam Mccaul uses his shifter on the Downtube of his trek remedy i believe, so if you can find a pic of that you could maybe see how he did it.

cam seems to have his rigured into the mounts where a water bottle holder would normally go, i could fab up something but my frame doesnt have the mounts and i dont want to be drilling my frame (obviously) im taking some thought to SS just because of the weight savings, but the reason im keeping the gears is because i have long rides to the places that i ride, not so much up and down but just long, so i like the options, aswell as i ride with more of a street trials style and need the gears for good pedal kicks ect.. im more or less just looking for someone who has done this before as i would just like to know how it turned out.

and for bar size im running a 22.2 bar with a snafu stem but i am getting some sic bars on a thomson stem inorder to shave off some weight (also 3" rise feels like crap)

my bars are curently 24" wide and i think ive found a place to mount my shifter, onto my seat stay

you can run the chase bars pretty narrow as the bend is in real close to the center.. id wait and see until you get teh bars to how far in you can get the shifter.

Yeah, but his gears snap crackle and pop when he sprints at jumps, I wouldn't go that route.


I understand your want for gears since you do Trials type street riding. I find it hard to believe you need your bars so short that you can't fit a shifter on them. Especially SIC bars that have a bend intended for cutting down.

I always thought guys that did trials stuff wanted wider bars for better balance when doing pedal kicks?

I use to cut my bars down all crazy, now I leave them un-cut. It takes a little effort at first, but you can still spin the bars, and x-up with them wide.

One really cool option I just remembered:

Go 5 speed w/ a short cage derailleur on a SS hub. Then, to shift, have a brake cable that goes from the barrel adjuster of the derailleur to the clamp. To change gears, twist the barrel adjuster. It's like friction shifting at the derailleur. Just get a really long barrel adjuster and put loctite on it so it won't slip, and you won't have to worry about skipping.
