Can’t say it wasn’t totally expected, but with so much going here it was a bit surprising

Started when I was 19 years old, drove 16 miles into work for over 20 years.
Ten years ago the company moved into my neighborhood and I was able to commute via bicycle that past 10 years (that was nice).
Hoping I can find employment within riding distance to continue the riding.

{Sigh}

Do you have enough in the portfolio to retire? Then you could ride your bike all of the time!

I'm confident I will get a pinkslip from Xerox someday.

Sorry to hear it happened to you, best of luck finding something new.

What line of work? Porn industry is just right over the pass.
Any IT positions in a major Porn Company?

No. I've got another 20 years or so to work.

31 years? Effin-Eh!!! I can only imagine the severance package! ;)...
I get 13 paychecks.

...Dude - what's with the avatar? Is that you?
Custom made by myself.

Back in the day they would give 2 weeks pay for every year of service. Then they bumped it down to 1.5 weeks. I think last layoff people got a candy bar.
Acutally last year they sold off a division and those people got $crewed! no severence, no vacation time re-accured. In a way I'm lucky...

31 years? Wow, how does it feel to have been working with a company for that long? I can't even imagine a more than 4 or 5 years right now...if that.

Good luck in the job hunt.

You were an IT guy for 31 years? Man 20 years ago you must have had an easy job.
No, only in IT for that past 10.
10 years as a Printed Circuit Board Designer, and CAE ADministration, also worked as ad raftsman, Document Control Administration, Engineering technician and Production Quality Assurance.
My only other job outside this company was an Airport Mecahnic

I remember when the PC first came out, puch-cards, teletypes units, the begining of "CAD-CAM", MS-DOS or IBM-DOS ?

Sounds like you kept yourself busy enough that any move now you're going to totally land on your feet with your qualifications. Ride through the summer and search for that golden job to finish out a work career.

i mean, to me personally, this sounds like a gift, this doesn't sound like anything in the least to be even minimally upset over, other than the uncomfortability of losing your 30 year old routine.

Anyways good luck on the next chapter, a change is usually good.

I work at a company inside a Ford dealership. I do all the electronic equipment for Ford. Remote starts, Power door locks, Alarms, Radio's, DVD systems, Radio repairs,Navigation and more.... Nation wide! The dealership I work at just closed down on the 31st of last month.... 2 days ago!

I still have my job as we are constantly busy, but... All my friends I have worked with, that did work at the dealership got fired! I have been there for 15 years and some of them had been there for more than 20 years. It sucked to see all my friends go, and I could not do anything about it. It was even hard for me to sempathize with them as I still had my job,But I still felt bad that they lost their jobs and I still had mine!
There have been 4 Ford dealerships in the Kc metro area close this month, and more to come.

Ford motor company is in a world of hurt now and they are closing at least 200 dealerships nationwide and 200 was on the small side in the estimations. Anyway..... I feel for ya man!!!!! Hope you bounce back and get a better job than you had.
Chris...
