but look at the 07 dhr,it went from 1.5 to 11/8 by customers request.
Nothing to do with 'customer' requests. It was a decision made by the few who were testing the new bike. If you look back at threads when this decision was made, I dont think anyone actually prefered the 1 1/8. Many argued that it did not matter (falsely I might add) and many who owned current DHR's were upset by the change.

For me, I would need to go up to a large (as many would) for next year as the new frame is smaller. The headtube on the large is longer than my current medium, and my current stack height would go from 6mm to close to 26mm. I would have a front end that was an inch taller.

based on all the threads trying to find low stack headsets, low forks, zero rise stems, and flat DH bars, adding an extra inch to the front end height is obviously not what most customers want.

Questions: Why doesn't anybody make a needle bearing headset? Wouldn't that solve the height issue? Is it a sideload problem?
Because it would need to be a tapered roller bearing (like car wheel bearings), not a cylindrical roller bearing, since headsets need to deal with massive thrust (axial) loads as well as large radial loads. It would still need at least as large an interface (laterally/radially) as a standard angular-contact ball bearing setup, so you wouldn't be able to just slip roller bearings inside the headtube (which I am presuming is your implication as to how you'd reduce the stack height?).

FTR, Shimano (I think) used to make tapered roller bearing headsets (Dura-Ace or something I think), and Syncros's massive FBI thing uses them too, in a zero stack 1.5 to 1 1/8th headset.

Over your shoulder whispering
Sorry buddy, you were wrong... I explained it quite adequately twice, just as the site did. Funny how it's magically right when someone else says it... nice try though.
Nah...he just explained it in a sentence I understood better. You'll get over it. :cupidarrow:

I didn't say i was right. All i did was find the pics and try to read the literature as best I could and make an uninformed suggestion. I even said I had no clue. Sorry I didn't get it the way you typed.....can we hug now?
