My Lady and I have a long car trip coming up soon, and I'm always looking for music to make her happy. Any suggestions for some chill, sing along type music? She/We really likes the band Slackstring for a referance point

this is all electronic/downtempo stuff, but sounds like it should suit.

Yeah, I havent heard of Slackstring, but I may have to check it out. This summer, in Kuwait, I was introduced to Sigur Ros and Mum. Great chill out music for sure. It's icelandic, so not really sing-along. Oh yeah, I love Jazz when I am chilling out too. Not sure if that's up your alley though.

Ben Harper, Ben Folds, Bedoin Soundclash...

Was gonna suggest a few of Narlus' suggestions but you need singalong...definently recommend Thievery Corporation.

DA BEARS.
Although I don't normally listen to CCR I have deemed them great for road trips and always grab a cd or two of them for long trips.

hmm...

i'd say anything by the band ("best of" compilation is fantastic) is excellent driving and singin' stuff. also, i just picked up some of the black keys...really good, rough bluesy rock; i love stuff that's raw and under produced. i second sigur ros. i've also recently got into some bluegrass stuff with a slide guitarist named kelly joe phelps...he's amazing (check him out on youtube first) and has one of the best southern bluegrass voices i've ever heard. and yes, john butler is a good call as well. he's a great guitarist when he's not over pop-like.

I agree with john butler trio and thievery corporation

galactic-funky and relaxed with tight vocals
maybe some string cheese incident-smelly hippie music but The album One Step Closer isn't too hipped out
keller williams-sweet acoustics and fun vocals
strangefolk-good music
xavier rudd-cool australian stuff, lots of slide guitar and didgeridoos
sound tribe sector nine-mostly no vocals but still definitely some chill songs

Yo La Tengo? (not gonna be a singalong unless you know the words, but still...)

Get the "Garden State" soundtrack, too.

The new Nora Jones alblum is really good FWIW, i have been listening to a lot of Old School Freight Train, they are bluegrassish. Some of the more chill 311 stuff is really good, there are a few tracks on transister that are really good (all of their stuff is good IMO). Then there are the staple Jack Johnson, Donovan Frankenrieter (sp?), Ben Harper ect... RJD2 is awesome, someone mentioned it above but its worth another mention, check out the alblum In Rare Form or Deadringer. A good comp to check out is Perfecto Chills, its got a really awesome remix of Nelly Furtado's Try. Hope this helps, have a good trip

Andrew Bird's Mysterious Production of Eggs

Andrew Bird is the man, absolutely and totally. Classically trained violinist, plays guitar, glockenspiel, and whistles like nobody's business. Smart lyrics, incredible composition. Underrated.
