Hey guys,

Just wondering.......what is a good source for Renter's insurance? I know that I've never had it, but started thinking about it. I currently have Geico as my auto insurance (it'd be nice to keep them all the same) but the offer their insurance through some 2nd party company or something like that. Just wondering if you get auto insurance and renters insurance on one policy does it lower your premium's at all? What's a decent company to go with? Just curious as I started searching.

I have my renters through USAA that also has my Auto, additional life, and my "secret" checking account. It was wicked cheap to bundle it, but you might not get a break since your auto carrier doesn't have a policy.

I gots me USAA. It's pretty nice. We got robbed back in 06 and it blew donkies, until the insurance paid out... then getting robbed was way cool.

You gotta have a relative in the military though to get USAA. I'm sure Aflak is cool, I mean, they have a gilbert godfrey duck for a mascot.

If you get renter's insurance, use it only for a HUGE claim, like a total loss of all your stuff. Think of it as catastrophe insurance. I know a few people who made claims on renter's policies for stolen bikes or whatever and when they later went to get homeowner's insurance they got shafted with significantly increased rates.

I'm deffinitely looking in to it. $14/month aint bad, as Zark said so I'll look in to that. We want to insure my wifes engagement ring anyway, plus I need it to get Dish Network (stupid apartment complex rules).

Zark, do you get a discount for having your cars through them also?

It knocked a bunch off my auto insurance being a multiple policy holder. The renters insurance more than paid for itself in what it reduced my auto insurance. So DO IT!

Same here. I went from $105 a month for both cars to $85 a month for $35k and both cars. I wasn't all at once, but because i have had my policies for over 2 years without claims, the rate gets reduced while to coverage increased.

I use to have Farmers insurance, they raised their rates to stupid high after 9/11 and I had to drop them. I went to some no-name insurance company for a long time and then switched to Geico for the last few years. Nothing really special about them, they were just the cheapest at the time.

I'll have to look into the Farmers stuff. I know State Farm I think seems to offer it as well but doesn't allow you to do anything online. The only real things of value next to my bikes and car is my tool collection. Other than that though if the apartment burned down I don't have much but I imagine clothes and all that garbage adds up big time.

I thought Farmers was going to be a lot, but it checked out cheaper than Geico and a few others, but once you put the multiple policy holder in there, it drops a bit more. My driving record is really clean though and my truck is paid off.

Its crazy how quick stuff adds up when you think about it.Say you are burned out by a fire and you loose everything.
Replace every CD, every movie, wardrobe, appliances, tools, bikes, etc.

Hey Zark......Did you have to make an appointment with someone locally for it? Their site gives you some basic quotes but I imagine you need to go through things and figure out what they are all worth...

I hear ya, my truck is paid off, I just turned 25 in December (so I was told after 9 years of driving things go down a hair) and my record is clean.

I hear ya though on things adding up. My girlfriend lives with me (well I live with her) but we spilt alot of things that are bought that are large items (electronics mainly) and then my stuff in our apartment. I'll have to look into this.

My renters insurance is also for replacement cost, not value. That was important to me because I didn't want to worry about depreciation and stuff. Just because I got a deal on my couch doesn't mean I will find the same deal if it burned up.

Can you get renters insurance for a dorm? I am crazy worried about my bikes.
I'm pretty sure your parent's homeowner's insurance covers this.

As for the renter's insurance, you can usually get some good deals when you go through the same company as your auto insurance. Either way, it's not expensive at all (compared to other insurances) and then if your dumbass neighbors light the place on fire or something floods, you'll get some cash back.

Dorms are almost always covered on homeowners insurance. Ask your parents to check into it.

As far as insurance goes, I think its pretty much a scam, and it kind of pissed me off when I went to get mine, because almost all companies won't cover my stuff and my fiancee's on the same plan because we are a male and a female living together and are not married. I think that is a load of crap. My agent told me that that pretty much doesnt matter unless all her clothes get stolen, because I can just claim her stuff as mine. We got $50,000 of coverage with a rider for her ring for like $250/yr. not a bad deal, but still a scam.

Some companies in Mass. will write a co-occupant endorsement which will cover girlfriend/ boyfriend situations , not sure where you live but it may be worth a call to your agent. Renters policies are usually pretty cheap (sub $200 per year depending on coverage) make sure you have a replacement cost endorsement on your policy. It gets rid of depreciation which is especially nice if you have multiple high end bikes, electronics, etc. (Instead of getting paid $500 bucks for your stolen 1999 Santa Cuz Superlight, they will pay you the cost of replacing the bike at todays value- if you don't actually replace the bike you still only get $500- thats the catch..). O yeah and most companies will offer discounts if you have your renters and auto insurance with the same company ( depends on the co. but it's usually around 10-15% off the total renters premium).

Hope this helps

USAA pretty much rocks. But from what I understand, almost all renter's insurance is pretty cheap.

Be sure to get renter's insurance. The cool thing is that it also seems to come with personal liability insurance, so say you lean on some guy's Harley and it falls over and gets a little scratched, I think the personal liability insurance would cover you on that.
