Aside from the body panels that had some issues with rust, those 2.2 litre engines run forever, and the cars are great.
my mom in peru still got the 2.2 legacy from 92, and it still hits the 215km/h mark...awsome car hehe
We have a 2.2 Legacy at work...it's a piece. Engine is solid but nothing else is.

Courier company. The beater Ford Escort wagon we have has held up better than both Subies...I like Subarus, but I don't think they live up to their durability reputation hype anymore so than a number of other cars on the road.
we have a '90 wagon, 205k miles and still goin strongth, thought the driverside lock is out...we are keeping it till it dies! which hopefully won't be till 400k miles!!
Do you have any issues with the transmission? Did your rack and pinon boots ever tear?
We've never had any tran issues with our Subarus or R&P boot tears. We have had CV joints go out both because of torn CV boots and another I guess that was just worn out....
I think mine is falling to pieces, The transmission has trouble shifting into overdrive, ad there are loud clicking noises as i turn around corners.
Auto trans? I'd never have an auto trans in a Subaru.
The loud clicking as you turn is probably a CV joint. Not that big of a deal from a repair standpoint.
Yeah its an auto, the car blue books as 2 grand. A new tranny cost over six. Really sux.

Yes, they can, and it's actually quite easy. Chilton's repair manual should detail it.
I did both of the front CVs on my old Legacy in about an a hour and a half from start to finish.

Did you just replace the CV or put in a new half-shaft? Was there any suspension dismantling that needed to take place?
