I had bone surgery yesterday (three screws into my second metacarpal). Doctor prescribed percocet and lortab...I've been prescribed opiates plenty in the past for various fractures/concussions/what have you, but never felt the need to use them as pain has never bothered me that much...but DAMN. Screws in bones hurt like a bitch.

Last night I popped a couple percocet and called it good...the pain was numbed (and so was everything else), but I threw up my goldfish crackers and chicken sammy about 2 hours later. This morning I took a couple lortab and they didn't do anything but make me feel off-kilter and queasy. I am taking them with food...doc's office couldn't offer any help but to take the lortab instead of the percocet.

I really want to stop hurting but I don't want to hurl mah cookies again...anyone out there have suggestions? I know lots of monkeys are filled with metal, speak up...

two dramamine... wait 15-20 minutes, then two percs, post tomorrow :)

Seriously, wtf is wrong with your doctor? Dramamine is over-the-counter and such a wonderful, simple little drug. I 'discovered' it when I had my ACL surgery. Send the 'rents or friends out to the local drug store.

Drink rum w/ the percos.
I love you.

Thanks for the suggestion, Opie. I used to take that as a kid for motion sickness, hadn't thought of that. The problem with my doc is that the dude who performed the surgery is a plastic surgeon...Ortho doesn't work on hands?

My experience is that if your not in a world of hurt, Percs will just make you sick. Ask for Darvocet. It's Percocet's little brother that isn't as addictive and still gets the job done for most things.
Oh yeah, don't expect to function. Being able to sleep is all you should expect.

When I broke my wrist and had the plate and 11 screws installed, I was prescribed Percoset. After finding out that I could not "really" OD on them, I started keeping a log of my pain level, the time of day, and how many pills I was taking, because I was taking a lot. Average 10/day.

I would awaken in the night every two-four hours writhing in pain, take two Percoset and go back to sleep. I was able to work, but would take an hour nap after taking the meds in the afternoon. Thankfully I never got ill. Or addicted. It would have been really easy.

Bone pain. It's a boogerbear.

Good luck with that. God's speed.

Took a pair of lortab right before posting this and just tossed my eggs and diet coke. Sadness. :(

Time to track down some dramamine tomorrow...

I ran my bike into a tree and split my wrist. The percs can make anyone sick if youre not used to them, take one first wait 30min to an hour and take the second. So they make you a little quesy for a few and barf some leftovers, its better than having broken bone pane running through your body.

I got Norco once. A VPS launch and it was nice, but very heavy. Cant see how it would help a break though.

Percs just make my skin itch.......I never got queasy on them.

Worst migrane I ever had---took two Percs I had left over from knee surgery earlier last year and it was all gone in about 5 minutes.

I just had to take Lortabs after my surgery. DEFINITELY take them with food and take 2 benadryl with them...it helps with the queasiness. I stopped taking them after a day because I hated feeling so spacy & queasy.

After that, I only took ibuprofen (to help with the swelling) and if the pain was bad, a tylenol.
Good luck!!!

I had the same problem with the percs after having an abdominal tear stitched up. Cutting the dosage worked for me. Instead of 2 every 4-6 hours as prescribed, I took 1 every 2-3 hours as needed, sometimes I could go longer.

I bet if you kept your hands out of your pants, they wouldn't hurt as much. :p

Ibuprofen never does sh!t for me. Booze or narcotics, I say...

This whole "keep your hand elevated so your fingers don't turn into purple sausages" crap is really annoying, though.

Sucking up the pain...I have a 6 page paper to writethat was due forty minutes ago...one handed.

800 mg of ibuprofen every 8 hours is pretty effective... (that's four of the over the counter pills)

If ibuprofen works for you, then you've never experienced real pain.
All pissing contests aside, the effectiveness of different analgesics in different people has a lot to do with person to person variations in the many enzymes and receptors responsible for mediating the pain response.

In addition, there is a difference between pain and suffering...these "feelings" are mediated by different locations in the brain and the connections are different in different people (ie, different people have different pain thresholds). One thing that differentiates opioids from OTC analgesics is that they sever the link between pain and suffering..ie you can frequently feel pain, but it doesn't bother you.

Bottom line, every drug is a little different in each person. Find what works for you.

I only took painkillers right before I went to sleep (Norco, Demorall sp?)...or else I just managed during my awake hours...but like previously mentioned I don't think a breakfast of eggs and soda is the smartest thing to do...D

After breaking my shoulder I was prescribed Oxycodone. The first time I took it I got totally sick and threw up. I was fine after the first time. Later on after that prescription ran out, there was a 1 day break in the meds and when I started again, it made me sick after the first time taking it again.

I say give it another try. Just in case.

I have a crazy tolerance for pain meds so they always end up giving me hardcore stuff because nothing normally works for me. Its weird, not even morphine works for me. It works for like 10-15 seconds for me then goes away. Vicodin just doesn't do anything, etc.

Pain meds for sure mess with people differently.
I have heard of so many people and the ones in this thread that take lortab and it make them queasy or sleepy.
They make me feel absolutely brilliant.
They put me in a good mood, and make me talk even more than normal. My appetite is fine on them as well.
About the only negative I can think of is coming off of them kinda sucks. Its weird, but I have seen them make other people really sick.

I was going to ask why vicodin hasn't been mentioned. I know it's lower on the strength level, but it's effectiveness (for me) has always been in the fact that it puts me right to sleep. Can't feel the pain if I'm passed the f**k out.

It's really just like any other addiction ... it takes some commitment.

I mean ...
Was drinking easy after the 1st barfin fit? No
Was smoking easy after the 1st coughin fit? No
Was having a girlfriend easy after the 1st yelling fit? No
And so it is with meds .... you stick with it tho ... it will get better. Promise. ;)

And if you can't hang ... please do send me your percs ... I seriously am out.

They're all the same. Just varying levels of Hydrocodone and acetaminophen.

Hydrocodone or dihydrocodeinone (marketed as Vicodin, Anexsia, Dicodid, Hycodan, Hycomine, Lorcet, Lortab (or Loritab), Norco, Novahistex, Hydroco, Tussionex, Vicoprofen, Xodol) is a semi-synthetic opioid derived from two of the naturally occurring opiates, codeine and thebaine.

if you don't have a diagnosed medical condition you shouldn't be taking narcotics. and if you do have a condition go to your doctor. hitting up strangers for leftover percocets is super shady.

Okay who stole Toshi's sense of humor? Seriously give it back.
seriously, what's funny about it? i don't find alcoholism funny, and i certainly don't find drug seeking behavior funny either.
