I'm in the market for a bike rack for my '03 Honda CRV. I'm looking for a rack that will fit downhill bikes up to 45#. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fit 4 DH bikes on a hitch mounted rack, but a salesperson told me that you can only fit one DH bike on a hitch mounted rack b/c of the weight.

What kind of racks are you guys running for your small SUV's? I'd love some ideas, suggestions, advice...thanks!!!

if the hitch cant hold more than 1 DH bike then it is one hell of a ****y one. If you can go for the thule t2, pricy but one he!! of a good rack. That hitch "should" be able to hold more, if it can't then its kind of useless.

You can put a hitch on a CRV. Almost did it to my wifes CRV. They make one in 1 7/8 hitch. Then you can get a hitch rack from Price Point for $100 that will hold 2 DH bikes. You should be able to get all for just under $200.

Can you link to these products?

I've got a 2002 Subaru Forester in need of a hitch rack and unfortunately I'll need to buy the hitch assembly and the bike rack.

could not find the Price Point Rack, but it is much like this one for $115

Now as for the Hitch itself you need to go to a local Auto store and pick one up for your car. All cars are different. You should be able to get a 1 7/8 hitch for it for around $100.

If you can afford it, get the Sportworks/Thule T2 system. Just be sure to ask for the 2" receiver mount. You may have to let the shop know that you are using it for mounting a bike rack and they should do the work for you.

The guy that told you that you can only get one DH bike on the bike is a numb nut, all you have to do is get the 2" mount and good rack on there.

If the Thule is too much, I was told that the Saris is decent. I'm not postive if they have a 4 bike mount for them though.

Scott at Bikeworks should be able to hook you up with a nice system...

Thanks for the input guys! Sounds like the Thule T2 is the way to go. Seems to me there should be no reason that the 4 bike mount should NOT work as long as I get a 2" receiver hitch.

I got a swagmen 2inch hitch rack, its only a 2 bike, but they sell a 4 bike, and a 4 bike upgrade for the bike bike, and they say it hold DH bikes so.......i'll let you know when I bolt on the hitch next week. Wayyyy cheaper than the Thule stuff too

If youre interested in a roof rack, Im running a Yakima King cobra and it will fit any bike from a 20" BMX to a 29er and it takes about 10 seconds to put the bike on or take it off

I used to have a King Cobra on my old car and it was a good rack. It went with the sale of the car unfortunately.

You've just got to be careful with a roof-mounted rack when going through the fast food lanes. But then again with a hitch mount you've got the danger of even being slightly rear-ended by another car.

I have the 2 bike version of the thule T2.
The design is killer and I'd love to get the attachment to hold a second pair or bikes..

the T2 is defiantely the way to go. Mine is a pre Thule version but it is super solid either way. When you get the rack, it will hold two bikes, then you can get up to to more add-ons (sold seperately)for a total of up to four bikes.

Now for smaller car owners (CRV, Subaru, etc) you will most likely find that there is ONLY a 1 1/4" hitch available for your car and this will NOT hold four bikes (two were fine on my outback, but any more would be no good) ....soooo....what you need to do is get a custom hitch with a 2" receiver. Find a hitch/truck joint and have them fab up a 2" hitch...add the T2 and you are prepaired to haul a LOT of bike.

edit: there are 2"class 2.5 hitches for the cr-v avalable..definately the way to go.

Another vote for the T2. Its the only way to go.

I mounted my 1 1/4" hitch myself, to my sedan, and it has a tongue weight of 200lbs. So the beefier, 2" welded version, will easily hold 4 DH bikes.

Best to go for the 2" version. The 1 1/4" bounces and bobs around just enough to make me nervous.

we've got a 2-bike thule on an aftermarket 2" hitch on an 04(?) CRV. it could hold the weight of an extra 2 bikes no problem, seeing as it's held my 190 lbs.

Ive got a T2 on a minivan and it works great.

There was a guy on MTBR and here on RM that had a CRV with the T2 with 4 bikes.

Sweet! This has made my decision easy!
Not trying to be a buzz-kill, but you are overlooking the fact that you are trying to put ~250#s worth of bikes and racks on the back of a small vehicle. Are you sure that the suspension can handle it? All of the weight is going to be on the rear axle, not to mention the leverage it will have. Its not like stuffing 250#s of gear in the back that will be more evenly distributed between both axles.
I would look into a small utility trailer. Harborfreight.com has a good selection. I bought a 4'x8' trailer from them for ~$250 (you will need to buy wood for the deck). It filds up to a 2'x5' footprint very easily. I think they also offer a 4x6. More overall weight but less of it is being supported by your vehicle. I use a wooden shipping pallet with some eyelets and tie-downs to hold the bikes. I cut the pallet in half and the wheels fit well between the slats. The pallet keeps the wheels straight, the tie-downs keep them upright.

That is what I have on my FJ. It folds up as well and even fits over the spare tire mounted to the trunk door. You can get an extention to hold two more bikes. It will hold 4 and they won't even touch eachother. The only downside if you will probley back into something, they are damn long, but I have not had one problem.

FYI, if your hitch can only hold 45 lbs, or your shopowner thinks that, he must have not been loved as a child.

Thanks for your opinion on this. I am a little concerned about the weight over the rear axle, but I ordered the setup already. Once the rack/hitch is installed, and we've tested it out, I'll let everyone know whether this is the hot ticket or not. I like your idea about the trailer...if this setup doesn't work, I'll go to plan B (trailer).

I have had 3 bikes and all of out gear in my outback for may a trip to whistler with no problems. The car drives like it is loaded, but it is much nicer than having the bikes on the top.

BTW the 2" hitch for the CRV has a tongue weight of 350 lbs. that is a large safety margin for 4 bikes plus rack (maybe 250 total).

I recently got a 2" reciever hitch installed on my explorer. Its a class two hitch which will hold 500 pounds on the hitch. I use the yakima version of the Thule t2. I only have the one that holds two bikes, as I usually don't need to haul more bikes and the 4 bike rack is sooo long.

I do not recommend getting a 1 1/8th reciever and using an adapter for a 2" reciever. Those are quite weak and should not be used to hold four dh bikes.

My gf has a Saris rack similar to what everyone os talking about. Its nice having options for hauling gear. She races DH, road, xc and Super D and I am a mechanic so its not uncommon for us to be hauling a huge amount of gear. Being able to throw a bunch of rubbermaid bins into it. Makes packing/unpacking go much faster and keeps or vehicles (we both have SUV's with 2" hitches) much cleaner.
