A new study released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the vehicles with the highest and lowest death rates. But as the data suggests, driver habits may have as much to do with fatalities as structural safety.

While the statistics may seem to suggest the vehicles with the highest death rates are the least safe, a closer look reveals driver behavior is almost certainly the deciding factor.

Take the Infiniti G35, for example. Its death rate is just 11 per million vehicles. Compare that to the nearly identical Nissan 350Z, whose death rate is a whopping 193 per million.

The vehicle with the lowest death rate is the Chevrolet Astro — an archaic minivan that performs horrifically in IIHS frontal crash tests (pictured). Despite this, its death rate is just 7 per million, compared to the infinitely safer Chevrolet Blazer, which has the worst death rate of 232 per million.

The lesson? It's not just what — it's how you drive.

look at the cars. expensive cars, lower deaths cheap cars more deaths. the expencive cars are most likly owned by people who rarly drive them and are buisness people ie: bmw 7series. and the death rate is higher in an eclipse because most people that dive them are kids who live the fast and the furious motto.

i think that survey proves nothing

I could explain how the way a car drives affects its safety. I'm sure roll overs are a big issue with the Blazer as is the RWD of the Mustang. But for the most part I would say age group has more to do with it.

I wrecked an Astro once. Plowed it into the back of a Lexus at 40MPH. I was fine...Airbags failed to deploy, though.

I used to drive an Astro for a work vehicle. I knew every railroad crossing in southern Ohio you could catch air on. Just don't try jumping one is strong crosswinds.

Or turning. Ever. You felt like you were going to tip over taking a right hand turn at 5 mph. I would've swerved to avoid the Lexus, but that probably would've sent the giant box on wheels tumbling down the freeway end over end.

Maybe it's just me, but that reads like a list of some very common rental cars. Maybe people get into these things and aren't familiar with how they handle?

And the Ranger and the Mazda B truck are basically the same. They handle like ass, (especially at higher speeds) - you just have to get used to it.

They're rentals because they're cheap and crappy. I rented a Pontiac Sunfire once and it is hands down the ****est car I've ever driven, worse than a $500 80's European Ford Fiesta. I never returned a rental before that.

Interesting that the 350z is the 3rd most deadly and the G35 is the seccond least, being that they are the exact same car under the body panels.
[nitpick]G35 coupe is 8" longer in the wheelbase and 13" longer overall than the 350z[/nitpick].
